This album by comedian Flip Wilson with special guest David Frost contains material from his TV show on NBC, The Flip Wilson Show. It was released in 1970 on Wilson’s own Little David Records – named after his son David, who in turn was named for the biblical David.

While the title and subline are set in Windsor Bold, “What You See Is What You Get” – a phrase popularized by Geraldine Jones, a recurring character played by Wilson wearing women’s clothing – uses an italicized style from D’Amico Jamian. This casual animated sans was drawn by James D’Amico for Photo-Lettering in the early 1960s. The heavy grot on the sticker is Folio extrafett.

The shown cover appears to be a variant – other versions show light bulb lettering spelling out “FLIP”. The packaging concept for the die-cut gatefold cover is by Album Graphics, Inc. Norbert Jobst takes credit for the cover design including the photography. Art direction by Sid Maurer.

This is the identity and website for my wife Eileen’s new business, Simply Brown. She chose D’Amico Regatta and I worked around it. Our goals were clarity and honesty (Bernina), warmth and fun (Regatta). More about the type palette below.

First type exploration. On the left, PLINC’s Copeland Milo with Rooney Sans (a lovely pair, but not the right choice for this project). On the right, final choices (except here, Kepler Regular at standard width).

From top to bottom, D’Amico Regatta, Kepler Semicondensed, and JAF Bernina Sans. Kepler roughly shares Regatta’s contrast, vertical stress, and angled top serifs — enough to carry the logotype’s personality downward into the composition. And this width and weight of Kepler, Semicondensed Medium, has a rhythm similar to Bernina. If this combination is successful, Kepler is the key. Bernina does its job quietly and unobtrusively, its round dots, tailed ‘a’, two-story ‘g’, and curvy ‘y’ contentedly similar to the corresponding shapes in Kepler.
