Radix has a web portal (danno.ch) providing all the information on the damages that drug abuse can cause. Kill screen was designed to embody the spirit of the arcade game in a contemporary way. The inspiration came from a kill screen where a random composition of monospaced letters was displayed after a software crash. On the occasion of its 20th birthday, the web edition of the national weekly newspaper Die Zeit will invite 500 people in their twenties to Berlin, to develop ideas for a better life.

The Escheresque glyphs in the festival logo are from Alfio Mazzei’s Utopia 14 (2013). The reversed open ‘Z’ is derived from the newspaper’s nameplate. These letters “with soul” were originally drawn by Carl Otto Czeschka in 1946, who also designed the typeface Olympia (Genzsch & Heyse, 1929). Around 2008, Oleksandr Parkhomovskyy of Rekord was commissioned to expand the few letters of Czeschka’s design (“DIE ZEIT”) into a full set of caps. This font known as ZeitType is exclusive to Die Zeit.

This post was originally published at Fonts In Use

The festival is located in the Swiss canton of Ticino, which has served as the site of many different ‘utopian’ and cultural events and communities since the beginning of the twentieth century. This was when an alternative, vegetarian colony was founded on the site, and the mythical golden age of Monte Verità began. Artists, anarchists, philosophers and thinkers settled there and share ideas.

In 2013 the title of the edition was “Utopias and Magnificent Obsessions”. The idea for the graphic system and typeface has been taken from “Utopia” as a keyword, turning it into a visual representation. Since it is a literature festival, we thought the best solution was to create an alphabet based on the “utopian” concept. That’s how the typeface Utopia (Utopie) has been conceived: a typeface inspired by illusionistic ideals, where every letter is a formal paradox — a form which cannot exist.

Source: rossimazzei.com RM&Co. License: All Rights Reserved.

Source: rossimazzei.com RM&Co. License: All Rights Reserved.

Source: rossimazzei.com RM&Co. License: All Rights Reserved.

Source: rossimazzei.com RM&Co. License: All Rights Reserved.

Source: rossimazzei.com RM&Co. License: All Rights Reserved.

This post was originally published at Fonts In Use
