For over four decades, Hayao Miyazaki has been enchanting audiences of all ages. This book is published on the occasion of the 2021 inaugural exhibition at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, in collaboration with Studio Ghibli in Tokyo. It accompanies the first ever retrospective dedicated to the legendary filmmaker in North America and introduces hundreds of original production materials, including artworks never before seen outside of Studio Ghibli’s archives. Concept sketches, character designs, storyboards, layouts, backgrounds and production cels from his early career through all 11 of his feature films, including My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001) and Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), offer insight into Miyazaki’s creative process and masterful animation techniques.

This website was built with Next.js, TailwindCSS, and Reshaped, aided by Claude and GitHub Copilot. It runs on Vercel with PostHog handling analytics and Clerk managing authentication. Typefaces are licensed from 10+ type foundries.

There’s also an AI messaging and voice experience powered by ElevenLabs.

The website for Zeppa, a design studio based in Amsterdam, reflects our bold and socially engaged ethos through a minimal digital identity.

The entire site is set in Moderat—a geometric sans-serif by TIGHTYPE. Its clean lines and rational structure convey both clarity and contemporary energy,

With this new site, we also take a step toward more energy-efficient web design. The dark mode interface reduces screen energy use, while a toggle offers visitors a lighter alternative if preferred.

Pastels, du pigment à l’œuvre (“Pastels, from pigment to artwork”) is an exhibition highlighting a selection of the hundred or so pastels held at Brest’s Musée des Beaux-Arts. Through major themes such as landscape, symbolism and portraiture, this selection highlights artists' renewed interest in this technique from 1830 onwards.

Atelier Bartleby uses Anto Rounded as the titling font for this exhibition. Texts appear to be set in Moderat, featuring its alternate glyphs for a g y.

Burg Hotel is a place to celebrate life uninhibitedly. A legendary place of longing in Oberlech, which has always had a reputation for the fantastical. From 2019 to 2022 Solid & Bold have been working with the elegant resort on their branding which heavily features Morion. For the restaurant logo, the designers modified the B and g. Throughout the identity, Morion is supported by Ballpoint Script and Moderat.

Poster and program for the 2024 edition of the Biennale des Musiques Exploratoires.

I created the graphic design and the photography for the visual identity, the official poster, and the program. The fonts used are Moderat and Moderat GRAME Display, designed by TIGHTYPE.

Büro für vielfältiges Erzählen engages in dramaturgical activism that broadens the view.

The office was founded in 2019 by Letícia Milano and Johanna Faltinat and offers training, lectures and dramaturgical advice, editing and story development for creatives and media professionals. Among other things, they support those who are committed to diversity but do not yet know exactly how to approach it.

Corporate identity development, creation of a design system including a style guide, web design, and barrier-free web development.

The Bellegarde Cultural Center is an institution dedicated to contemporary and digital arts located in Toulouse, France. For its new identity, Vif Design used Kernevel for the logotype and titles, with Moderat for informational text. For now, it looks like only the signage system was redesigned.

Visual identity for French Bre(a)d, a branding studio dedicated to crafting bespoke and unique visual identities, with a focus on food-related brands. The application of their new look includes business cards, custom website design and social media templates.

Futura Passata from AlfaType is the brand typeface, supported by Kalice by Margot Lévêque. Smaller texts use Moderat from TIGHTYPE.

Tired of the ongoing, unfulfilling search for the holy trinity of underwear (comfortable, sustainable and sexy), Nala decided to take things into their own hands. Nala is an Australian-based underwear brand making fun, bold and comfortable products with a sustainability focus, empowering their audience to look, feel and do good. They had the product expertise to create planet-friendly, affordable underwear without the sacrifice of quality. And they knew what they stood for – a mission to break social stigmas around women's bodies and create an ultra-inclusive lingerie brand that stood for and represented all body types, genders and races.

With this in mind, Universal Favourite created a flexible and vibrant design system that looked as good as their offering felt and championed the diversity and attitudinal tone of the audience they serve.

The brand uses simple and reliable typefaces to offset the beautiful visual rebellion of the photography and patterns. The primary typeface is Moderat Condensed – its low-stroke contrast and subtle detail providing a timeless quality suited for body text and large headlines. It pairs perfectly with Moderat Mono, whose technical flair and tactility sings as the brand’s accent font. The Nala logo is custom drawn.

Kristin Peake Interiors is an interior design service:

Kristin Peake’s design approach is characterized by the belief that there is richness in restraint. While every home takes its own form, develops its distinctive refrain, all are linked by an air of lightness, a generosity of space, that inspires you to breathe easy and move freely—to feel unfettered by fuss and instead, energized by artful intention and order. Engaging clients in this journey is her greatest joy.

In tune with that, the Kopius typeface family is a contemporary serif type that features friendly characteristics with round, open counters conveying a relaxed ambiance. On the website, it is paired with Moderat Extended. Both typefaces are loosely spaced throughout the website, which was designed by Daniel Cardoza.

Oli Booth Architecture is an architecture enterprise based in Auckland, New Zealand. The new brand identity taps into the distinctive intentionality of the OB A design philosophy.

A reductive typographic system is utilised and allows the architecture to tell the story. Moderat acts as the primary brand typeface for its contemporary feel and subtle character and is supported by Söhne and Söhne Mono. Alongside this is a distinctive art direction approach that evokes the personal, connected feeling of the architecture.

The publication Was bedeutet für mich Designkritik? (“What does design criticism mean to me?”) is dedicated to a subject that is currently given little attention. Neither the public nor the design disipline itself deals with criticism in depth—unlike, for example, visual arts, literature, music, etc. In order to counteract this, people who work in design in various functions were asked the same question: What does design criticism mean to you? Twenty personal answers show how relevant the critical discourse is with and for design.

The book is published by Prima.Publikationen (Stuttgart / Basel), a young publishing house for design and artists books, founded by Ephraim Ebertshäuser and Marina Gärtner of studio it’s mee who designed the book.

Messina Serif (Bold and Bold Italic) is the main typeface, paired with Moderat with its alternate lowercase letters a, g and y activated.

The OKOK-Meter is a series of interactive instruments that measures the user’s “OKOK-ness” based on their behavioural patterns. Based on the readings, the meters playfully dispense a reading slip that displays results assessing their state of OKOK-ness with oKoK, a fictional unit of measurement.

Working closely with OKOK Services to visually explore and interpret what “OKOK” could be, MPTY reimagined OKOK Services having a non-creative arm which designed, manufactured and produced OKOK-Meters, with METER being an acronym of Measuring Equipment for True Emotional Reading.

The meters
The art direction and design of the meters – from functionality, form and typefaces, to naming and instructional copy – took inspiration from the utilitarian vernacular and details of meters, gauges, and apparatus.

Studying devices of different shapes and sizes, past and present, analog and digital, the neutral and functional visual language of the meters were playfully contrasted with unconventional shapes and colours, and the inclusion of subtle “faces” in each meter. Outlined versions of the meters were also created, reminiscent of technical drawings used for communicating how something is constructed.

A functional and information tone, similar to labels seen on appliances and electronic products, was applied across the naming, numbering system, labelling, and usage instructions.

Logotype and logo lockups
The custom-drawn logotype drew reference from information systems from factories and laboratories. With it being monospaced, it allowed room for different stacking and configurations of the letters O and K.

Graphic system
Following the designs of the meters, the established visual language was extended into a graphic system. A set of modular brand assets was derived, enabling flexible and further implementation into selected applications.

Collaterals and merchandise
A limited range of printed collaterals and merchandise was produced to complement the direction, including t-shirts, caps, namecards, and stickers.

In the original text of Mafarka le Futuriste, Roman Africain by F.–T. Marinetti, the word Soleil appears 113 times. Throughout the pages, the sun is praised, prayed, feared and threatened: is it the real star of the story?

Roman Solaire reinterprets the first version of the Futurist novel through an expressive use of the typography, which aims to suggest a multitude of stellar landscapes. All the O’s in the text are transformed into heavenly bodies that, overheated, rise into the sky.

This book was made as a student project at ISIA Urbino, MA Communication and Design for Publishing, under the supervision of Leonardo Sonnoli and Irene Bacchi.

Identity for the second edition of Brescia Design Festival in 2017, a month of exhibitions, conferences and installations. The theme is transformation, understood as a change of form and meaning. Transformation as an evolutionary process. The event involves Corso Mameli and Corso Garibaldi, occupying the unused shop windows and commercial spaces with the works of young independent national and international designers.

Form (Bizarre Bizarre) is used for headlines, paired with a yet unidentified sans serif. [edit: It’s Moderat, see comments.] Design by Studio Sūqrepubliq, with illustration by Studio Anark.

The Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz (“German State Philharmonic Orchestra Rhineland-Palatinate”) is the largest and most important orchestra in the state, based in Ludwigshafen. It is considered the symphony orchestra of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region with a diverse musical spectrum: this ranges from the great symphonic music to music theater productions to film music projects. This year, the Staatsphilharmonie celebrates its 100th anniversary. For the jubilee season 2019/2020, Michael Francis will be the chief conductor.

Piero Milano Gioielli is synonymous with excellence and prestige, creating the most original lines of jewelry. To do this, they, in fact, select the very finest materials, such as gold, diamonds, precious and semi-precious stones.

In this project we want to tell a promise and a story made between two people and a symbol that represents this promise. A jewel. For the fonts we looked for Vinter to convey the refinement while Moderat represents the hard work of the Italian craftsman.

Museum Het Rembrandthuis (The Rembrandt House Museum) in Amsterdam is not just Rembrandt’s former home and workshop; for more than a century it has been a museum with its own collection. The collection consists primarily of works on paper. Rembrandt’s etchings are well represented of course, but the museum also has prints by his predecessors and contemporaries, as well as by modern and contemporary artists who were inspired by Rembrandt. — Museum Het Rembrandthuis

The design of the exhibition is based on three principles: focus, colors and urgency. Focus is displayed by big blow ups of the original etches of Rembrandt; Colors by using four bright colours in each room, one colour per theme; urgency is expressed by using big type for each theme which is based on the importance of reflection and looking ahead on the museum’s own collection.

Our typographic weapons of choice are Arges Black Condensed (Blaze Type) and Moderat Extended Regular (Tighttype).

Streetart artist Sweetuno developed a “Modern Times” lettering. Modern Times is a concert series with emphasis on early 20th century music. The magazine is not monothematic and is published four times a year.
