Weatherlight is an expansion card set of the playable card game Magic: The Gathering. Weatherlight was released in June of 1997, and was the eleventh expansion set released for the card game.

Shown here are a variety of card packs, boxes, and print advertisements. Above you will see two packs of magic cards.

The logo for Weatherlight is set in Liefendre, a calligraphic typeface designed by Jim Marcus and released by T-26 just a year earlier. The logo uses the alternative W glyph.

The Magic: The Gathering logo combines custom lettering for “Magic” [based on Quadrata II, see comments] with Belwe for “The Gathering”. The print ads below use a combination of Liefendre and ITC Legacy Sans.

This performance of Stravinsky’s Petrouchka by the Boston Symphony Orchestra with conductor Pierre Monteux was recorded in January 1959 and originally released in 1960.

For RCA’s 1975 reissue, the uncredited designer combined the heavily decorated Green Buzzard D with Aquarius 2, the lightest style of Ronald Arnholm’s semi-slab.

Aquarius in use (two different weights) on the front cover of Ricochet, a live album by Tangerine Dream, recorded and released in 1975. The typeface by Ronald Arnholm is also used for the title on the back cover of the vinyl. The credit text is set in Kabel. The back differs on the CD versions, and an alternate cover exists with a different layout and typeface.

The cover photographs are by Monique Froese. The layout is credited to Graphiti. I couldn’t find any information about this agency or person.

Front cover of the introduction, typical of the graphic design used on most of the manuals in the iAPX 432 series.

Intel iAPX 432 was a computer architecture introduced to market in 1981 and discontinued around 1985. It formed part of the iMAX 432 system which was coded in the programming language Ada and intended to support Ada and similar systems and languages that would be familiar to AI practitioners in the 1970s and 1980s.

Most of the documentation (that is available in the bitsavers directory of scans) has covers with the Intel wordmark of the time based on Helvetica, and with the dropped e. Titles are in Helvetica, or some version thereof; note the e with a terminated stroke cut at an angle.

The hero of the covers features the repeating word INTEL432 set tightly and on a diagonal line; the line being locked together and presenting a ragged edge on left. The shapes of the letterforms have been skewed vertically upwards to make a rising diagonal baseline. The font is Aquarius ExtraBold, used in outline except for one instance of INTEL432 which is filled. Aquarius is a classic 1970s design based on a monoline slab serif with geometric taste and memorable for its somewhat experimental philosophy of serifs (example: the capital I has serifs top and bottom, but only on the left-hand side).

While the covers are professionally designed and typeset, only a couple of the manuals are typeset inside; most of them are reproduced from typewriter material, including styles that are largely equivalent to Courier and Letter Gothic. The System Summary: a Manager’s Perspective is an exception, being professionally typeset throughout: in ITC Souvenir Demi for the titles, and Regular for the body (at least, I assume it is the ITC version of Souvenir given the publication dates).

I can’t resist also being diverted into illustrating the use of typewriter graphical effects. The front-matter of many of the manuals has a list of relevant Intel trademarks, some of which feature a dropped e that the typist has emulated by rolling the platen up and down a few clicks. Given the inconsistent and sometimes slightly wonky nature of the this effect, I assume this was done manually.

One of the manuals is a pre-release for internal technical review and is accompanied with a typewritten cover note featuring the Intel wordmark drawn using typewriter word-art.

It is fair to say that the chart demonstrating the innovation level of the Intel 432 architecture would now be regarded as “fantastically optimistic”.

This showing of the Intel trademarks has a few more dropped e’s, a dropped m in iₘ, a raised 2 in I²ICE, and a smattering of a raised R (for registered trademark).

Dust jacket designed by Doris Borowsky for the 1986 St. Martin's/Marek first edition of the non-fiction true crime book Zodiac by Robert Graysmith. Author photograph by Margot Graysmith. The book investigates the many theories surrounding the unsolved serial murders committed by the elusive Zodiac killer in the late 1960s. It also offers some potential suspects for the crimes, identified by pseudonym. The book served as a major inspiration for the 2007 film Zodiac, directed by David Fincher.

The front panel, spine and front flap of the jacket feature the book's title set in Lee Bold, which is also used for the author's name. For the spine of the hardcover, both the book's title and author's name are set in a metallic-red on black cloth. Additional text on the rest of the jacket is set in Futura. While the titles in The Eiger Sanction use Venture (see James’s contribution), the posters as well as the trailer feature another typeface by VGC that was also released in 1972: it’s Aquarius, a “semi-sans” (or semi-slab) by Ronald Arnholm. See it side by side with Venture and other VGC novelty faces in the December 1972 issue of Industrial Art Methods on Mark Simonson’s website.

Aquarius is used in caps from one of its bolder weights for the title as well as for Clint Eastwood’s name. Co-star George Kennedy gets squooshed Helvetica Light, the names of Vonetta McGee and others are set in Univers Condensed.

1973, deep in the Era of Brown. This typeface is Aquarius, designed by Ronald Arnholm and released by VGC shortly before, in 1972. The logos of Bell & Howell and CEC/Instruments Division are probably custom drawn. The slogan “We’re rewriting the book” is set in tightly spaced caps from Gill Sans.

Bell & Howell is a former manufacturer of cameras, lenses, and motion picture machinery, founded in 1907 in Wheeling, Illinois. CEC was a chemical instrument manufacturer founded in 1937 by Herbert Hoover, Jr. in Pasadena, California, and merged with Bell & Howell in 1960.

Bell&Howell Datatape, located in Pasadena, California during the 70s and 80s designed and manufactured state of the art magnetic tape recorders which were typically used for telemetry by military and aerospace facilities and laboratories. NASA used them to record the Apollo missions video which became the “Lost Apollo Tapes”. The early ballistic missile launches at Vandanburg Air Force Base were recorded on the one inch wide tape. Other laboratories such as Los Alamos and Sandia had many of them. The US Naval recorded sonar for spectral analysis.

The 2007 annual report for the Mondriaan Foundation was awarded as one the best Dutch book designs and additionally received an honourable mention in Best Book Design from all over the World. From the national competition’s website:

Each section has its own spot colour swiftly and skilfully guiding the reader through the works. The typography has been well thought out. The text face is a humanistic-looking sans serif that has been provided with precisely the right amount of white space.

For the chapter headings there is an upright italic which has been used most imaginatively, complete with imitation iridescent print.

The Apollo–Soyuz Test Project, in July 1975, was the first joint U.S.–Soviet space flight, and the last flight of an Apollo spacecraft. Its primary purpose was as a symbol of the policy of détente that the two superpowers were pursuing at the time, and marked the end of the Space Race between them that began in 1957.
