Wurzelgeflecht (German for “root network”) is a handbook on founding collectives – and insights into the creative work of artists and cultural workers. It contains (almost) everything you need to start a collective: step-by-step instructions, discussions, and ideas on how we want to work creatively in the future – and why we should stand up for the value of our work right now.

The desire for community is a fundamental human need – a natural process that also occurs in nature. This idea shapes the aesthetics of the handbook. At the same time, it is an experiment: an exploration of the possibilities of artificial intelligence – in the areas of text, code, and image.

The publication is divided into two chapters that combine theory and practice: founding and building collectives, and discussions that address ethical, economic, and educational issues. A handbook for anyone who works creatively and collectively – or wants to become part of a network.

The design and typography for this project were meticulously crafted by me, Julian Grönberg, art director at Simbayu Studios, under the creative direction of Rony Rex. In contrast to the vibrant and colorful world typically associated with Rony Rex, this event unfolds under the cover of night, embodying a character born from the enigmatic symbol of a question mark. The design elements cleverly integrate the curves of two question marks, one forming the character's body and the other serving as its arms. This duality is also reflected in the logo, where mirrored question marks intersect. The typeface, boldly chosen, is T1 Zirbal in both its regular and bold variants, adding a striking visual element to the overall design.

Protocol is an interdisciplinary and independent magazine about current discourses on architecture. Initiated by architecture students at the University of the Arts Berlin, it is published annually with a changing focus. This issue deals with the topic of criticism. Criticism arises between observation and interpretation, in search of arguments that evoke counter-arguments, evoke emotions and raise doubts. But what are the critical themes in architecture and what is the current state of criticism and critical thinking? Various international text and image contributions are dedicated to these and other questions. The design includes a grotesque typeface specially created for this issue, named Kritik. It’s paired with SangBleu Kingdom by Swiss Typefaces. The entire magazine was offset-printed in black and a Pantone spot colour.

Bissgurn in use for Kontrast trifft Kreativität trifft Wort trifft Warten. (“Contrast meets Creativity meets Word meeds Waiting”). The typeface was specifically designed for these two books. Made as graduation project in the Information Design program at FH Joanneum.

Divided into a theoretical and practical part, design meets contrast, contrast meets creativity and creativity meets two books.
