Hauss and Raum, the new typefaces by Justin Sloane and Huw D. Williams, in use for display and text for Mitome, the world’s first comprehensive mitochondrial analysis testing kit. On their website, they use Neue Montreal.

Hauss and Raum are living up to their promise as a perfect display and text pairing. The futuristic health testing company, founded by Chris Masterjohn PhD, seeks to put mitochondrial health at the forefront of conversations around energy, cognitive function and aging. The forward-facing clarity of Hauss and the organic cellular forms of Raum fit the job perfectly.

Softer Digital Futures: London 2025 brought together artists, designers, and thinkers to imagine regenerative, nature-inspired approaches to technology. Held at The Art House in Hackney, the event featured panels, performances, an exhibition, and immersive design spaces.

This year’s visual identity, created by Lucy Harmony Grimes, played a central role – merging digital and organic aesthetics in a bold, soft-femme-tech style. Through swirling textures, butterfly motifs, and a palette of pinks, flowers, and bubbles, the identity challenged the tech industry’s typical hard-edged minimalism. They used a combo of soft sans serif and rounded pixel fonts. Among them, Raum by Justin Sloane, Acid Grotesk by Folch, and what looks like a modified setting of Lineto’s LL Moonbase, featuring its alternate e.

Raum introduced inktrap-dented letterforms that added a tactile, humanized feel to the branding. It extended across physical and digital formats, including merch, and signage, shaping the atmosphere of the event. The result was a cohesive, expressive design ecosystem that echoed the conference’s themes of ecological intelligence, more-than-human design, and digital softness.

Apple Music Chill is a radio station launched in December 2024, designed to provide listeners with a continuous flow of relaxing music across various genres. The station aims to offer a sanctuary of sound, helping listeners unwind and find calm throughout their day.

Programming includes ‘mindful moments’, brief interludes intended to encourage presence and relaxation. These programs explore how music can serve as a tool for focus and mental well-being. It used Raum, the new experimental display typeface by Justin Sloane and Huw Williams, characterized by its distinctive inktrap design.

Trois Mille, a typeface designed by Marc Rouault and distributed by Sharp Type, was used for the exhibition named Giants at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) and Alicia Keys presented a selection of art pieces from their collection, that critique society and celebrate Blackness. The title and the artists names are paired with the text typeface Simula Italic, drawn by Justin Sloane and published at Sharp Type, too, plus Dinamo’s ABC Diatype. The identity of this exhibition plays with the size of each element, Trois Mille set in Black 15 and in a very large size emphasized the names of the artists. The color palette of flashy yellow and red bordeaux highlights the rich colors of the paintings in the background.

Description of the exhibition by the Brooklyn Museum:

The Brooklyn Museum’s presentation spotlights works by Black diasporic artists, part of our ongoing efforts to expand the art-historical narrative. “Giants” refers to several aspects of the Dean Collection: the renown of legendary artists, the impact of canon-expanding contemporary artists, and the monumental works by such creators as Derrick Adams, Arthur Jafa, and Meleko Mokgosi. Immense pieces—including the largest ever by Mokgosi—are paired with standouts such as Parks’s seminal photographs, Wiley’s revolutionary portraits, and Esther Mahlangu’s globe-bridging canvases.

Clotilde Briquet is a Gibraltar based lawyer offering advisory and consultancy services for French-speaking UHNWIs (Ultra-high-net-worth individuals) that are changing their residence to Gibraltar.

Kenshō Agency’s visual identity utilises a Simula with modified characters (Sharp Type) for the logotype, alongside Plantin (Monotype) for display type and Euclid Square (Swiss Typefaces) for both body copy and accent type within the logo lockup.

Julian C. Duron designed the album cover of Mort.Domed’s Morters using Simula, the first typeface designed by Justin Sloane and distributed by Sharp Type. He is a graphic artist working in print and digital media based in New York City. Julian is working for global corporations, start-ups, event spaces, art spaces, music labels, and ad agencies. Simula is paired with various styles from Akzidenz-Grotesk.

Mort.domed was born and raised in Austin, Texas. He started DJing clubs at the young age of 16 and has been steady sharpening his sword ever since. This record was written, produced and mixed by Jack Oertli, mastered by Ben Hixon and distributed in Europe by Lobster Records. “This 4 tracker is all killer no filler and is sure to take the roof off any club”, according to Growth in Decay Recordings. This company is a Texas based dance music audio and visual platform that specializes in vinyl, screen prints, cassettes, and zines, and they have been promoting Mort.Domed’s album.

Sundown is the second solo studio album by singer Eddie Chacon. Produced by John Carroll Kirby, it was released on March 31, 2023, on Stones Throw Records.

The cover was designed by Justin Sloane, using a photo by Jack McKain and Sloane’s own Notre Ami. This typeface is an ongoing exploration inspired by the cover lettering of the book Notre ami Louis Jou from 1929. It’s used for the title as well as a sort of logotype, with swashy caps and a nested Ch pair. The supporting sans is another unreleased design by Sloane currently titled Office Grotesk.

Design Bay Area is a platform dedicated to promoting design and amplifying the voices of the California design community, and those in adjacent fields, to create economic opportunities by fostering the local and international community.

Mucho was tasked with creating a visual identity for the new organization. The biggest challenge was creating a new identity that is unique to the Bay Area, while being able to represent all the different design disciplines within the region. This identity also needed to work alongside and as the umbrella brand for San Francisco Design Week.

Our solution was to channel the optimism, warmth and openness of the Bay Area. We developed the concept of ‘West Coast Energy’ which is represented in a timeless, dynamic new symbol — reminiscent of a spark, or sun, the symbol shines back from the West Coast.

Art direction for Placement Perfumes, an independent perfume studio from Singapore. Creation of the logo and global identity, brand photography and web design.

Placement Perfumes creates immersive fine fragrances that will traverse through space and time with you. Over seven years of autodidactic fragrance design experience infuses their work with a distinctive voice that simultaneously reveres and obverts established perfume wisdom.

The name Placement was chosen to underscore the reality of each perfume as not just an experiential vapour but a tangible, purposeful object – of art, design, and beauty, contained within its own set of coordinates. A favorite perfume has a place in your heart, in your regimen, and deeper in your subconscious than you might imagine.

For the logo, I used the font Sometimes Times by Boulevard LAB. It is a timeless serif integrating contemporary aesthetics to classic form. Inspired by individualistic old-style serifs and mid ’90s culture. Sometimes Times works perfectly in big and medium sizes while still holding legibility in smaller sizes. The use of both regular and italic fonts emphasizes the aspect of freshness.

For the perfume scents title, I used Byrd by Good Type Foundry. It is chunky, happy and a bit retro, rounded sans serif typeface. I paired it with Simula Book by Sharp Type, a very simple and legible typeface for smaller texts.

Szczera Sfera (“Honest Space”) is a Poland’s first non-profit educational project focused on eating disorders and people’s complex relationships with food. Promoting self-care and raising awareness of various mental issues connected to eating, the project challenges our social obsession with flawless looks and perfect weight. The educational approach and thoughtful questions encourage dialogue with the initiative’s Instagram followers, who are often directed towards the in-depth specialist articles published on the project’s website.

In terms of typefaces, we decided to go for two alternative styles – artist and designer Justin Sloane’s debut typeface Simula (Sharp Type) and Roger Gaillard’s ES Rebond Grotesque (Extraset).

The project’s visual identity incorporates a vivid blue shade that is not to be found in any food item and has been said to curb appetite. The logo, which employs sharp lines, conveys the problematic relationship with food by depicting a twisted fork. Deliberate, hand-drawn forms and outlines used in the illustration style stand in opposition to perfect geometrical shapes.

You Belong There is the first full-length solo album from singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Rossen (of Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles), released on Warp Records.

The album was designed by Justin Sloane, with photography by Amelia Bauer. The back and single covers feature a custom design dubbed You Belong There, drawn by Sloane as an amalgamation of forms found in the lettering of Louis Jou. Captions were typeset in Greenstone, designed by Connor Davenport and available from Sharp Type. The type used for the text set on a spiral and on the record labels is Notre Ami, another unreleased design by Sloane. This ongoing exploration is inspired by the cover lettering of the book Notre ami Louis Jou (1929).

Insurance is often synonymous with misfortune and mistrust. Laka needed a brand to challenge those preconceptions, establish a positive, community-based model, and turn the industry on its head.

We partnered on brand strategy, visual and verbal identity, art direction, website design and writing.

Laka are currently focused on cycling insurance. But this brand had to be bigger than insurance policies for bikes. It had to tackle the traditional insurance model while establishing a collective of cyclists that would look out for each other. Where members would pay their share for claims that actually happen rather than ones that might. This brand needed to demonstrate the value of clubbing together.

Following the strategy and identity work, we moved on to helping Laka write and design their new website. And to capture the Laka members in our unique photography style, we held a socially distant photoshoot with Jason Bailey. This identity has been a collaborative effort made all the better for such daring and decisive clients. Long may the ride continue.

The typography combines Ambit (CoType) with Simula from Sharp Type.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, a new platform celebrating collaboration, innovation, and social impact emerges using Simula for headlines and Garnett for text.

Collaborative Change is an effort across The London School of Architecture, ft’work, The London Festival of Architecture, and The Future Fox. The website exists as a digital catalogue, constantly growing and open for submissions from anyone. The goal is to record and celebrate these responses to a transformative global event, ultimately inspiring and prompting further action.
