The Wooden City by Benjamin Gallagher is an exhibition of highly laboured, meticulously constructed forms drawn from his close observation of the built environment. Gallagher’s background in architecture and industrial design is deeply informed by decades working alongside his father as a heritage tradesman, specialising in the restoration of slate roofs — many of them across Maitland. This combination of formal study and hands-on craft underpins a body of work grounded in material knowledge, precision, and lived experience of the buildings we inhabit. Hosted at Maitland Regional Art Gallery.

The exhibition branding features Hardy. Its forms mimic those found in the pieces throughout the exhibition. Hardy is used alongside DIN 2014, the MRAG’s standard typefaces, used in several widths.

Sara De Giovanni, who has coordinated the project, presents it as follow:

The project, which lasted three months and concluded on September 28, was curated by historian Chelsea Szendi Schieder in collaboration with a group of queer and feminist archives based in the city of Bologna. All these archives are part of non-profit associations that joined forces to highlight through the exhibition the work carried out by archives and human rights associations in combating the processes that attempt to erase the memory of LGBTQIA+ individuals and subjectivities in a society increasingly marked by dangerous currents of homo-lesbo-bi-transphobic hatred.

On the occasion, the museum did not directly produce the exhibition—neither in terms of choices about installation nor about graphic design—but instead offered the associations and archives a space to realize the initiative, endorsing it politically within the broader context of Bologna, a city known for its strong commitment to fighting discrimination and prejudice. The promoting associations did not gain any profit from this project other than the increased visibility of the causes they represent.

The main title is handwritten, paired with Gaya Italic.

The rounded sans used for the location and date at the bottom (and for the information about the other exhibition) is the original version of LL Typ1451.

Transforming words into actions

The State of Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) and the Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes (CDHC) launched a statewide service to support people targeted by hate. It had a phone number. What it lacked was the public’s awareness and trust. My team at Span was brought in to change that.

Working alongside UIC’s Institute for Healthcare Delivery Design (IHDD), we renamed, rebranded, and reintroduced the service to the public. The result was Help Stop Hate – a trauma-informed, multilingual, statewide service and campaign that reframed reporting not as retaliation, but as care in action.

Initially piloted as Illinois v. Hate, the helpline's name implied conflict and positioned the state as the protagonist. Moving away from tension to solidarity, the renamed service Help Stop Hate is a three-word promise. Help centers care. Stop signals urgency. Hate names the problem—without euphemism.

Three cuts of Grilli Type’s GT Planar were used, allowing ‘Help’ to lean forward into action, ‘Stop’ to lean back in urgency, and ‘Hate’ to sit still—unignorable. The visual language draws on civic forms: rigid diagonals, grounded color, modular composition. Designed to function everywhere from Chicago CTA ads to community newspapers and rural county billboards.

To reach survivors—not just residents—we kept the value proposition simple and kind. “Report hate, get support” is about access and letting people know: they are not alone.
This is where the secondary type Grenette come in with a quiet strength. Its rounded serifs and open forms contrast the sharpness of GT Planar, with enough tension to hold your attention. It reads almost tender, full of warmth and charm with a subtle nuance that feels hand-touched.

The Not in Our State campaign launched in the seven most spoken languages in Illinois: English, Spanish, Arabic, Polish, Hindi, Tagalog, and Mandarin. To complement the primary sans and serif styles of the identity, each language pairing used two typefaces. For Arabic, we selected Noto Sans Arabic and Noto Naskh Arabic. Hindi used Noto Sans Devanagari alongside Noto Serif Devanagari. Mandarin was set in Noto Sans SC (see Source Han Sans) and Noto Serif SC (see Source Han Serif).

Grieg Seafood isone of the world’s largest salmon farming companies with brands in the USA, Canada, and Europe.

Mission Design made a new visual identity for Grieg Seafood built around a wave-like shape inspired by a creative concept titled “Ripple Effect”, symbolizing how small changes create far-reaching impact. This became the foundation of a flexible graphic system with vibrant colors, dynamic layouts, and an updated tone of voice. New imagery highlighted taste, connection, and the joy of eating, bringing the brand’s story to life.

The headline font chosen for this is IvyPresto. On the website, it’s paired with both FF DIN and DIN 2014.

Since 1982, Australian brand Spitwater has produced premium quality, hand built Australian made pressure cleaners, “Jetfire” space heaters and “Vacstorm” vacuum cleaners, extraction units and scrubber dryers are hard at work in mines, on farms, at workshops, in factories, in floods, droughts and fires. Their branding features Brik (Mike Hill) and DIN 2014.

Spitwater also sponsors a wide range of performance race cars teams across Australia.

For the “Cameo” lettering and for the A/B letters the studio used Yuni Grotesque by Philipp Neumeyer of Rüdiger. The titles feature Baustraße produced by Fantasia Type and distributed by Future Fonts. The inner sleeve and all additional informations are set in DIN Rounded 2014 wich was released by Paratype .

The website uses Shentox (Emtype Foundry) as the main typeface, for their logo and headlines. Short copy and navigation are set in DIN 2014 (ParaType).

Brand identity for Prokhodnoye Mesto (Проходное Место), a bar in the center of Moscow. Alexander Lubovenko’s Stapel (Paratype, 2020) is used in stacked and justified caps for the English-language navigation. DIN 2014 Stencil (Vasiliy Biryukov, Paratype, 2017) is used in the “МЕ́СТО” logo. The font used for the Chinese text is unidentified.

Vasily Biryukov created the typography on the exterior of Parka, a bar in the center of Moscow. The interior was designed by Archpoint. The type on the windows is DIN 2014 Stencil. The typeface used on the awning is Input Mono. The bold stencil letters for the logo are from an unidentified font, or might be custom drawn.

Fi is a smart dog collar with a suite of smartwatch-like tools. Fi’s aim is to not tame your dog, but let them be more free. We developed a branding that celebrates natural canine energy and athleticism.

We picked YWFT Pakt because it was sporty and serious, but slightly imperfect. Instead being perfect and invisible, a few imbalanced letterforms give it a bit of frantic energy that works well for the brand. The secondary typeface, DIN 2014 Narrow, lets us to keep the sporty, condensed spirit in more functional, smaller applications like body copy.
