Shire Types in use

Shire Types in use. “… a collection of six typefaces … [that] bring together a heavy, solid notion of the Industrial Revolution mixed with ideas about specific localities. The individual typefaces take their names from six of the Shires that are grouped together around the Black Country and neighbouring rural areas.” — Jeremy Tankard

While Derbyshire and Staffordshire are relatively straightforward caps-only typefaces, the other four styles exhibit unicase forms – caps mixed with lowercase or uncial glyphs, without any extenders. Derbyshire, Cheshire and Warwickshire are sans-serif, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire have (semi) slab serifs. Warwickshire and Worcestershire are more cursive in nature. Expanded to support Greek and Cyrillic (2011) as well as Arabic (2012, together with Mourad Boutros).

In December of 2015, Twitter users noticed something was off with their Reese’s Trees. They looked like turds. Blogs, news sites and even TV shows quickly picked up the story, officially making it a controversy. Our response? Spin the conversation by introducing a new injustice: tree shaming.

This one is for the miners, the steelworkers, the printers, the firefighters, the millions unemployed, the injustices the Hillsborough familes were forced to endure, the Poll Tax protesters, those who lost their lives on HMS Sheffield, and the Belgrano, for what? For the women of Greenham Common and the Trident missiles we didn’t want. For Bobby Sands and the prisoners who starved themselves to death while Thatcher denied them their political status. For the NHS and the nurses, our schools and teachers, the council houses sold off, the privatisation of our public utilities, railways and buses. For our school milk. For the reputation of St Francis of Assisi.

The Phoenix Comic by Matt Baxter of Baxter and Bailey is “a 32 page full colour comic full of 100% original stories, and incredible competitions”, and supposedly “the best way to get kids reading” — thephoenixcomic.co.uk

The buoyant bold typeface is Derbyshire, the most restrained member of Jeremy Tankard’s Shire Types series. An interspersed ‘X’ from the animated Warwickshire has been used to round off the logo.
