Each Poison, A Pillow combines fragments from found footage, private archives and digital interfaces to present a candid approach on the topic of women and alcohol(ism). While looking at the phenomenon of female drinking behaviors, Stefanie Moshammer is also reflecting on her own family story, interweaving social media content, medical and scientific research, as well as advertisements.

Dominicale is valued for its crafty flavor, featuring angular and incisive shapes reminiscent of the primitive engraving style found in early European printing characters around the beginning of the 16th century. Its humanistic structure and close association with calligraphy lend it a warm tone, particularly effective when focusing on human subjects.

Ocean Front Property is a photobook designed by Nicolas Polli, with texts by Brad Feuerhelm and Ezekiel Honig and a soundtrack on compact cassette. The soundtrack was originally released on Senufo Editions as a CD in July 2020.

“I was in search of water and the effect its absence had on me,” writes Canadian sound artist and photographer Mark Templeton about his second photobook, Ocean Front Property. From this sense of absence and geographic isolation grew a new body of work with two components: A book of color photographs, made entirely in the landlocked province of Alberta (“where the nearest ocean is a thousand kilometers away”), and an Audio Experience (a ‘soundtrack’ to the book, included as a digital download or available on a limited edition cassette).

The design of the text pages is simple and sober: one background color and one typeface, Dominicale, which brings the design to the pages and the audiotape. “Dominicale” sounds medieval, and in a way it is, although its profile is humanist and its details have a crafty flavour. From the Altiplano typeface information:

Twentieth-century revivals of early humanist type, like Monotype’s Bembo, were interested in these poetic, floral qualities, which were interpreted in a way that looks fine and mannered in comparison to the originals. Dominicale is interested in the opposite: it interprets the primitive, rough setting of the early printed book into a bold, angular structure; it ignores the geometric for the energetic, and looks for its details to woodcutting.

Brasilia is a monothematic magazine of designs students of Hochschule Hannover, under the art direction of Hanover-based design studio Bureau Bordeaux (Jasper Eisenecker, Arne Meyer, Christian Vukomanovic).

“For Brasilia #1, we once set up some pretty rough typographical ground rules that specify the layout grid, the logo placement and the use of three typefaces—MT Grotesque, Times and an additional style font, that varies from issue to issue and fits the topic,” says the Bureau Bordeaux team.

The additional style font chosen for issue #3 is Dominicale Alpha (Altiplano Typefaces).

Issue #3 of Brasilia considers the notion of “waiting,” approaching the subject from all angles in a series of written, illustrated and photographic editorials.

Foam is an international photography magazine published three times a year by Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam. Issue 41 features an early use of Dominicale Alpha (Altiplano).

This issue of Foam Magazine explores image-based activism and the impact that photography can have on the world. The focus is on the people who are trying to send a message, those people who utilise both their role and platform to communicate a cause or a crisis to the public. In a world that is overcome with images what is needed to make you take notice?

Every two years, the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland, entrusts a photographer with carrying out a photographic survey. The theme or subject of the survey must be related to the canton of Fribourg. In 2012, the chosen artist was Matthieu Gafsou.

At its origin, Dominicale Alpha was designed specifically for Gafsou’s Sacré. As a graphic designer I [Raphaël Verona] decided to set all the texts in a Bembo-inspired typeface with details informed by contemporary crafts that could be well-suited for both headline and text.
