Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase based their 1970 typeface on Lubalin’s logo for Avant Garde magazine. The Condensed was drawn by Ed Benguiat in 1974, and obliques designed by André Gürtler, Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt in 1977.
Unfortunately the current digital ITC version does not include these optically corrected obliques. Bitstream’s and E+F’s versions do, but lack all the ligatures and alternates.
