“Bold Antique was designed by Morris F. Benton in 1904 and issued by ATF in 1905. Bold Antique Condensed was drawn by Benton in 1906 and issued in 1908 or 1909.” Copied by Lanston Monotype. ATF reissued a version named Whitin Black (with Whitin Black Condensed) in 1963 (discontinued in 1968). [McGrew 1993]
Both widths of Whitin (plus an outlined variant of the condensed) were adopted for phototypesetting [VGC 1972].
Digital interpretations include OPTI Antique Bold (Castcraft, 1990–1991) and Whitin Condensed Black (Claude Pelletier, 2015). See also Wichita Serial.
