Shukai (Ukrainian: Шукай, English: “to hunt, to look for”) is the name of an archive record label focused on bringing back to life the lost tapes from the 1960 to 1980s – Soviet music for films, television and private archives of the outsider artists.

It is run and collectively art directed by Dmytro Nikolaienko (DayNight), Dmytro Prutkin and Sasha Tsapenko. The logo is by Yevgen Anfalov of Kyiv Type Foundry

Canal Projects is a non-profit contemporary art institution dedicated to supporting forward-thinking international artists at pivotal moments in their careers. Through production, exhibition, research and interpretation of this work, they intend to foster artistic practices that challenge and reflect on the current moment. Canal Projects is located in the Soho neighborhood of New York City.

Having faced an academic year like no other, the Royal College of Art’s fashion department made sure to close off the graduating term in a similarly unforgettable and unconventional style. The result was Voyager.

Voyager was not simply just a documentation of the year’s work, but also of the year itself, collating all of the now-digital workshops, projects, lectures and events that would have previously been in-person. It was the role of Voyager to translate these experiences in a way akin to the tone of the year; manifesting the precious work of the students in an unpolished, unintimidating and accessible form that is also, in its own way, experiential.

Voyager became reminiscent of a sketchbook, taking a dual form referencial to both a working object and a serial document. Both commodity and tool. Expressing the individuality of each student, each book is likewise unique, using its own off-cuts to construct the page of its contents, as well as the book’s external wrapping; thereby using the process of its creation as its own artistic expression.

LL Heymland is used for cover type. The book interior is mostly set in LL Unica77. You can flip through the nearly 1,000 pages and download the entire publication on Issuu.

Are we living in reality? Is this the past, or the future? And is there a human on the other side of this screen? These questions rear up and twist back on themselves in Ubi Sunt, a genre-breaking imaginative work by Blaise Agüera y Arcas.

The title, borrowed from Latin and Medieval poetics, describes elegiac verses modeled on the formula Ubi sunt qui ante nos fuerunt?, meaning “Where are those who were before us?” Such was the mood of the anonymous early English poets who spun stories of giants and ancient battles amid the tumbled Roman masonry of 8th century Europe. Fragments of our own digital civilization stand like ruined columns throughout Ubi Sunt—transcribed lectures and drone footage, recorded cab rides and text messages. In a parallel present, an engineer is caught in the solipsistic first-person loop of a life in tech during COVID lockdown.

Is this book fiction or nonfiction? Though speculative, its historical material is accurate, and its present tense is drawn from life; some of its AI dialogs, too, are generated by interaction with a real large neural language model. Postmodern in the spirit of W.G. Sebald’s The Rings of Saturn and Benjamin Labatut’s When We Cease to Understand the World, Ubi Sunt is an erudite, compulsively readable, all-terrain joyride across the uncanny valley between yesterday and tomorrow.

Ren Hang in Peace (R.H.I.P) is a research based play about the internationally renowned Chinese art photographer Ren Hang – his life and artistic practice, his struggles and too early death. Ren Hang comitted suicide in Februrary 2017. He was only 29 years old. Ren Hang is most well-known for his body positive depictions of the Chinese youth population. His works challenged Chinese censorship and caused a stir around the world. As he put it in an interview: ”I want to show that in China we are not robots – but people with genitals and a sexuality.”

Ren Hang in Peace (R.H.I.P) is a story about the relationship between the external societal reality and the inner private space; a single individual in the form of a Chinese LGBTQIA+ contemporary artist with severe depression in a the world’s largest country, where mental illness isn’t discussed publicly. The play’s manuscript can be characterised as a recycling mix, built on materials in Chinese consisting of a monologue, poems, photographs, blog posts written by Ren Hang and a collection of interviews and biographic films, in which Ren Hang appears. The material has not previously been presented in Denmark.

The performance was shown at Galleri Image in Aarhus from 22 to 28 April 2022, and at Fotografisk Center in Copenhagen from 28 March to 9 April 2022.

The National Museum of Lithuania opened the exhibition Antanas Ingelevičius: Creator and City in the History House in Vilnius. Antanas Ingelevičius (1892–1947) is a Lithuanian photographer who remained unknown throughout his life. The exhibition shows the story of a mysterious man and his archive of photographs as a record and milestone in the history of Lithuanian photography.

Accompanied by a visual map of Kaunas, where the photographs were made, the exhibition aims to give context to the master's œuvre. The exhibition tells about the city and its actors: the photographer himself and those who got into his photographic lens – street workers, launderers, newspaper and market vendors, artists, writers, and so on. Photographs protect the life of the city dwellers and the memory of the place.
