A condensed grotesk of moderate weight, distinguished from many contemporary designs by an ‘a’ with horizontal tail. Origin unknown. Seemann (1926) shows Enge halbfette Grotesk (Bauer) and the very similar Enge Grotesk (Haas). Devroye mentions an Enge Grotesk by Haas and dates it to ca. 1870. Flinsch (which was merged into Bauer] had a design named Enge halbfette Grotesk in 1896. [Archiv]. Succeeded at Bauer by Venus schmal dreiviertelfett. “Hamburgers” is just a sample text.
