Latin Antique in use

Latin Antique in use. A low-contrast roman of wide proportions with flare serifs. Origin unclear. “ATF’s Latin Antique No. 520 was Marder, Luse’s Latin Antique No. 120; other founders had it simply as Latin Antique; though BB&S originally called it Latin No. 5. It is a wide, medium-weight face with very small, rounded serifs, and lacks the curlicues of Latin Modern or Modern Antique.” [McGrew 1993] Lightface Latin Antique is a lighter weight. Morgans & Wilcox showed a wood type version in 1891. [Kelly 1969]

This style was known in Germany as Breite Etienne (1860). Versions under this name were carried by AG für Schriftgießerei u. M., Bauer, John, Schelter & Giesecke, and Schelter & Giesecke. Anglian by Genzsch & Heyse (in-house, 1879) is very similar, too. [Wetzig 1926–40]

Murtaugh is a digital interpretation of its 6-point size.

A handbill advertising Cheny's Repair Shop, whose proprietor was William R. Cheney (1859–1932). His last name appears here in print as “Cheny,” but his gravestone adds an extra e—“Cheney.”

David Bachman Landis of Pluck Art Printery (later known as Landis Art Press) printed this piece with the “Cheny” spelling, and he also printed a separate business card for him using “Cheney”—see W. R. Cheney, Carriage Builder, Lancaster, Pa.

Lancaster city directories document the spellings of William Chen[e]y's name and his business and home addresses between 1877 and 1903 (see below). Based on the addresses alone, it appears that the handbill above (with 412 North Christian Street) dates to 1888 or 1890, while the business card (26 North Christian Street) corresponds to the directory entries for 1892 and 1896. If 24—instead of 26—North Christian Street represents the same location, then the city directories show that he continued in business there during 1897 and 1898.

See Alan Mays’s Flickr post for additional details about William Cheney's business.

With the exception of Challenge (BB&S) and the unidentified gothic of lighter weight, all typefaces seen here also appear in a similar layout for another advertisement printed by Landis, see “The New Singer Vibrator!” handbill. “Carriages” and “412 North Christian Street” are set in two sizes from Gothic No. 122. The design of this typeface varies greatly from size to size. While the larger sizes have a G with bar, diagonal terminals in C or S, and an R with curved leg, smaller sizes feature a barless G, horizontal terminals, and a straight-legged R.

This post was originally published at Fonts In Use

Pennsylvania Railroad
Free Pass
This pass is good on all railroads provided the bearer walks, carries his own baggage, swims all rivers, and stops at Huggins, the Tailor, 207 Locust St., Harrisburg, Pa.
Return ticket.

Someone clipped this spoof of a railroad pass out of a newspaper published sometime in 1906 (the text on the other side of the clipping helped me to determine the year).

Despite the promise of a potentially valuable "Free Pass" for the Pennsylvania Railroad, it becomes quickly apparent that there's a catch. "This pass is good on all railroads," it says, "provided the bearer walks, carries his own baggage, swims all rivers, and stops at Huggins, the Tailor, 207 Locust St., Harrisburg, Pa."

Edgar J. Huggins, who's listed as a "merchant tailor" in Boyd's Directory of Harrisburg and Steelton for 1908, used this fake pass as an ad to attract potential customers to his shop in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

It's likely that Huggins' Free Pass ad appeared during 1906 in the Harrisburg Telegraph newspaper, but I haven't been able to figure out exactly when (I did locate other “Huggins the Tailor” advertisements in the issues for March 22 and May 9, 1906).

At first I was puzzled by the illustration. Why would a railroad pass—even one that's intended as a joke—depict a canal boat being pulled by horses rather than a locomotive pulling a train? (See a rotated version of the ad for a better view of the boat.)

But after considering it further, I think that placing a canal boat on the Return Ticket extends the joke by suggesting that the pass holder—who presumably has already had to walk, swim, and carry his own luggage to get to his destination—will have to return home on a form of transportation that was already outmoded for passenger travel well before 1906.

For another mock railroad pass used as an advertising novelty, see Pennsylvania Railroad Pass, Hess and Flinn's Station, 1882.

This post was originally published at Fonts In Use
