“Designed at ParaType (ParaGraph) in 1997 by Tagir Safayev. Based on Gasetny Chorny (‘Newspaper Black’), of Ossip Lehmann foundry, St.-Petersburg, 1874, and Kompakte Grotesk of Haas.” [ParaType]
Black Grotesk is a digital version of a design that originated as Zeitungs-Grotesque (Francke, c. 1874). Includes Latin and Cyrillic characters. The latter follow Woellmer’s version named Fette Zeitungs-Grotesk. The italic is an oblique, and not based on John’s Fette Kursiv-Grotesk (1892). [Reynolds]
