A phototype face of unknown origin, but perhaps inspired by Europa Grotesque which it nearly matches (with alternates). Shown in 1976 as California Grotesk (in the index as California Grotesque), in four weights plus an Outline style [Lettergraphics 1976]. Shown by Fürst as California, in five weights plus Outline, with alternates for ‘fjrtyJ’ [Fürst c.1976].

Radius (in or before 1968) appears to be a precursor. California Grotesk is distinguished by a bearded ‘G’, a tailed ‘a’, a non-bracketed roof in ‘t’, and square instead of round dots.
