50 Ik puber ook (“50 I reach puberty, too”) is about a turbulent phase of life for women. This becomes clear in the thirty-five portraits included in this book. Thirty-five photos and thirty-five stories. Thirty-five differences and some striking patterns. Four essays provide context.

In this 156-page softcover book that is printed in black and white we combined the sans serif type Logical, designed by Edgar Walthert in 2018 with the classical serif Collis, designed by Christoph Noordzij for the TEFF library.

The first time anyone was diagnosed with AIDS in the Netherlands was in April 1982. In the more than 30 years since then, the situation regarding this deadly disease has undergone immense changes. These days, an AIDS diagnosis is very rare in the Netherlands. Instead, people with HIV are living fully normal lives with what is essentially a chronic infection.

Author Erwin Kokkelkoren interviewed 30 different men and women who are living with HIV, each of whom was diagnosed in a different year from 1982 until 2012. Their stories surprise, move and inspire. Taken together, the portraits sketch the history of HIV and AIDS in the Netherlands.

In the 232-page hardcover book that was printed in full colour we used the typeface Collis, designed by Christoph Noordzij for the TEFF library. Each story starts with a spread, combining a big title that is cut on the left side in combination with a full size photography.

Treasury! Masterpieces from the Hermitage (De schatkamer! Meesterwerken uit de Hermitage) is both a feast for the eyes and an enthralling quest for the meaning of art at various times and in a wide range of cultures. Masterpieces by Western artists like Velázquez, Tintoretto, Rembrandt, Matisse and Fabre are compared with top works from many different periods, places and cultures. What, for example, links a sixteenth-century triptych by Maerten van Heemskerck with an image of the Buddha made in twelfth-century China? The comparisons produce exciting and unexpected results and show that, however different cultures may seem, the ideas behind them often have an amazing amount in common.

With contributions from Mikhail Piotrovsky, John Leighton, Henk van Os and others. The cover is set in Collis, designed by Christoph Noordzij for the TEFF library. In the interior we combined Collis with Univers and Foundry Gridnik.

Studio Dumbar:

For more than 20 years Items has been The Netherlands’ leading magazine on design, craft, architecture and the visual arts. Prompted by an evolving editorial formula, BIS Publishers Amsterdam selected Studio Dumbar to create a new concept for the magazine.

Our approach led to a sharper distinction between regular elements and topical features. We increased the visual impact and editorial significance of imagery, providing space for featured projects to shine. We also gave the magazine an added function as a showcase for new graphic design by introducing new fonts for lead features. Created by Dutch type designers, many of the fonts weren’t commercially available at the time of going to press, maintaining Items’ reputation for showcasing the finest in cutting edge creativity.

The primary typeface is Collis, a rare gem from TEFF. The logo appears to be based on Berthold Caslon Book, with a custom ligature.

Nina Noordzij designed a series of book covers and jackets for Van Oorschot with only one typeface — Collis, designed by her husband Christoph Noordzij, a wonderful workhorse that has seen rare use over the years. Interestingly, it is called “a typical The Hague-style typeface” on the TEFF webpage.
