A fraktur distinguished by a tall lowercase and by forms that
are sturdy, clear and unambiguous, and simplified, “omitting all
superfluous flourishes and appendages”. No overhangs, thus making
many ligatures superfluous. [1912
specimen]
Also known as Anker-Schulfraktur and sometimes
spelled Schul-Fraktur. Designed in-house at Schelter
& Giesecke and issued in nine styles: Nr. 18 (1886 [Reichardt:
1893]), Nr. 19 (1888 [Reichardt: 1894]), fett (1890), Nr. 20 (1900
[Reichardt: 1899]) and breit halbfett (1889 [Reichardt: 1899]),
halbfett (1903), eng halbfett (1907), schmalfett (1918), and breit
[Nr. 22, by 1912]. [Wetzig 1926–40] [Reichardt 2011] Larger sizes in wood.
Accompanied by a set of initials drawn by Friedrich W. Kleukens.
Jugendfraktur (Nr. 21, 1906) is a related style with
less traditional caps.
Adopted for the Typograph as Schul-Fraktur.
[Wetzig 1926–40] Monotype’s adaptation is named Wittenberger Fraktur.
Gerhard Helzel digitized the mager (1997) and
halbfett (2000) in two sizes each, 9–10pt and 48pt, plus a fett
based on the 20pt size (2003). More…
