Logo for the third season, 2008–2010

Hannah Montana is the story of Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus) who lives two lives. During the day she is just a regular student but at the night, when she puts her blonde wig on, Miley becomes a superstar known as Hannah Montana. The TV show premiered in 2006 on Disney Channel and ran for four seasons, the final one being named Hannah Montana Forever.

The logo of the show was designed using several fonts: the initial H appears to be from Gillies Gothic Bold with the bar extended to the left. “ANNAH” looks like it’s AG Book Rounded Black with added weight. “MONTANA” uses a slightly modified Typography of Coop Flaired. “Forever” (season 4 only) is a beefed up Filmotype Honey.

Junegull was used for names of actors and creators of the show in season 1 and 2 opening credits. In season 3 the credits went through major update and Junegull was replaced by Arcade Black. In season 4, the final season, the font was switched once again and names appeared in Arial Rounded Bold.

Mel Bay’s Ukulele Chords In Picture and Diagram Form, first published in 1959

Around 1973, Mel Bay Publications revamped the look of their Chords In Picture and Diagram Form series once again. The cover design with Jolly Roger that was introduced just in 1970 apparently didn’t cut it anymore. The portrait of ol’ Mel Bay (1913–1997) framed by a psychedelic floral pattern had to go, and was replaced by silhouettes of instruments filled with multicolored stripes. The only graphic elements that could stay were the MB monogram and Mel Bay’s name in Filmotype Honey.

The new display typeface is Circue, used in all caps. This naïve face with cookie-cutter counters was shown as a VGC original in 1973, without credits. It’s not yet listed in their catalog from the year before. Castcraft copied it under the name Chapel. In 2019, Phil Bracco of Pink Broccoli made a digitization named Blackhole PB.

The subtitle and the avalanche of chords are set in Helvetica schmalhalbfett. This family member originated at Haas as Commercial-Grotesk halbfett and was later replaced by Matthew Carter’s Helvetica Compressed. It’s not included in Linotype’s digital Helvetica.

The address is added in caps from News Gothic on some covers and from Univers on others. Some of the back covers (not shown) feature ITC Bookman, which was released in 1975.

Mel Bay’s Guitar Chords In Picture and Diagram Form, first published in 1959

In the early 1970s, Mel Bay’s series of booklets with Chords In Photo Diagram Form was redesigned. While the front covers previously featured Orplid and various bold condensed sans serifs, they now used Jolly Roger Raised for the title, with Honey for Mel Bay’s name and Endowed Jones for the subtitle. The booklets are undated, or state the date of the original publication. Jolly Roger and Endowed Jones both originated at Alphabet Innovations in 1970 – the booklets in this design thus can’t be any older than that.

The back covers are largely identical to those of previous editions, and feature a range of period faces including Brush Script, Lydian, Cloister, Franklin Gothic, and Flash, with Futura for the address.

Filmotype Honey in use for the title of an album by Enoch Light, recorded with the Light Brigade and released by Grand Award Records in 1960 (G.A. 238 S.D.). Light was the head of A&R and vice-president of Grand Award Records. The names of artist and band as well as the track titles are set in Copperplate Gothic.

Unlike on many other earlier covers by the label, the rotated type in the trapezoids is not set in Caslon 540 Italic with Clarendon caps, but in two light sans-serif styles of contrasting width, possibly a stretched light Helvetica with Lightline or News Gothic. There’s at least one other record featuring this modernized framework, The Ink Spots’ “Greatest” Vol. 3, also from 1960. Soon after, the whole device was dropped, making room for individual artwork. The Illustration for the depicted sleeve is by Tracy Sugarman.

Filmotype Honey was originally released in 1955. In 2010, Mark Simonson provided a high-quality digitization with a large set of automatic alternate contextual characters and ligatures as well as extended language support.
