Commemorative editon of Boccaccio’s 700th birthday. The book contains 10 selected novellas richly illustrated by artist Alex Cerveny.

Eccentric Books has started the publication of a book series of all the fantasy novels written by William Morris. Morris wrote these books during the last decade of his life and published most of them himself at Kelmscott Press. Although little known today, these books are the beginning of British fantasy and they have been a strong influence on authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.

The design of the books tries to capture Morris’s spirit of the original Kelmscott editions and transfer it to the 21st century and to a very different production method. We have maintained the traditional layout with the wide margins, the use of a dark contemporary Venetian typeface, almost everywhere in one size, and the use of decorative elements.

Two books have already been published — The House of the Wolfings and The Roots of the Mountains.

The main title for the miniseries Band of Brothers was designed by Michael Riley of shine and was nominated for Outstanding Main Title Design at the Emmys 2002. The fonts in use are Vendetta by John Downer and FF Scala Sans by Martin Majoor. 

This is the story of “E” Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division from their initial training starting in 1942 to the end of World War II. They parachuted behind enemy lines in the early hours of D-Day in support of the landings at Utah beach, participated in the liberation of Caretan and again parachuted into action during Operation Market Garden. They also liberated a concentration camp and were the first to enter Hitler’s mountain retreat in Berchtesgaden. — shinestudio.com

architectural paintings connected to and from the period after the painter and architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Architectural painting experienced a surprising revival in the first half of the 19th century which was triggered by the fact that medieval architecture itself had become charged with a highly emotional significance.

Fernkopie designed the visual identity for the exhibition. The typeface is John Downer’s fascinating Vendetta, which, according to its author, is “not a historical revival”, but “instead an indirect but personal digital homage” to the Venetian Old Style. The designers made full use of the family. For the title, the Bold is interrupted with a dynamic cursive ampersand. There are small caps and both oldstyle and lining figures. The English text in the leaflet is set entirely in the wonderfully angular Italic.

The accompanying catalog (not pictured here) was also designed by Matthias Wittig and Jonas Vogler and is set in Vendetta, too.
