The exhibition Dear Future presents ten artistic positions by young graduates of Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. The joint presentation offers a critical perspective on the present and a vision of the future. Marlene Bonamy, Lynn Gerstmair, Leon Meschede, Jonas Mosbacher, Hanbyeol Mun, Todor Joe Musev, Keren Rothenberg, Anna Taradina, Ayaha Tokusa, and JiongJi Wang provide insight into their individual approaches to analyzing the present and future and translating them into artistic formats.

Open-disciplinary design opens up new perspectives by breaking down the boundaries between disciplines and positioning designers in a fluid in-between space. This dialogical process fosters new approaches that not only enrich creative practices, but also provide deeper answers to complex societal issues.

Challenging traditional definitions, this Master’s thesis made by Julia Klass and Corinna Gratzl at HTWG Konstanz explores the dynamics of a design practice where disciplines merge. Designers and experts at the intersections of architecture, scenography, product design, craftsmanship, graphic design, art, and science were visited and interviewed in their work environments. Photographs from this process capture details, moods and traces, enhanced by scans of materials and surfaces.

The resulting dialog illustrates how exchanging perspectives reshapes the role of design today. It also examines whether open-disciplinary work today is driven by a new mindset compared to earlier developments.

The design is guided by the central theme of “opening doors”. Metaphorically, it shifts from “in front of” to “behind” the door, combining two perspectives: the external view highlights structural factors, while the internal view delves into personal insights and introspective reflections.

A publication compiles insights from 13 interviews through quotes and visual material—not to portray individual positions, but to highlight overarching ways of thinking and enable connections.

Paper Still Matters was rebranded from a design bookshop into a global creative lifestyle brand. TYPE01 Studio anchored the brand in the idea that people buy into stories, not just books. Bithoot is a newly established digital agency, driven by a passionate team dedicated to building tailored digital solutions. They approached me to create their entire visual identity from the ground up, setting the stage for their brand as they step into the industry.

At the heart of Bithoot's identity design is a fresh logo featuring an owl—a symbol of wisdom that speaks to their strategic approach. This is complemented by a defining graphic element: a line with a loop.

The straight line represents established, mainstream methods, while the loop represents young minds in tech that bring disruptive and innovative ideas to established and mainstream methods. Bithoot's team aims to challenge convention and inspire change.

With a fresh logo and cohesive brand elements, I worked closely with the client to define a bold identity that reflects their mission: to deliver impactful, customized digital experiences. This comprehensive branding captures their commitment to innovation and collaboration, positioning them as a trusted partner in the digital space.

Belafonte is a workspace designed to feel like home. Inspired by The Life Aquatic’s iconic research vessel and the warmth and charisma of Harry Belafonte, the visual identity strikes a balance between minimalism and comfort.

At the heart of the design is a subtle yet distinctive logo set in ALT Riviera, a symbol that shelters like a house, reinforcing the idea of a welcoming and personal space. The visual language is integrated into the architecture and interior design to create a serene and inspiring atmosphere for work and creativity.

The identity embraces a monochromatic approach in its core applications, enhancing the sense of cohesion and tranquility within the space. In contrast, ephemeral elements such as gift postcards introduce bold, vibrant colors, injecting energy and playfulness into everyday interactions. This thoughtful contrast ensures that while the brand remains elegant and understated in its daily presence, it also has moments of warmth and spontaneity that make it feel alive.

The Museu del Disseny—DHub Barcelona presents Matter Matters. Designing with the World, an exhibition curated by architect and researcher Olga Subirós:

Matter Matters. Designing with the World, rethinks the material foundations of design in a time of climate emergency and planetary crisis. Featuring over 600 objects from the Museum’s collections, spanning the 12th century to the present day, alongside nearly 100 contemporary works by invited participants, the exhibition exposes the extractivist origins and colonial past of material production while advocating for design as a tool for regeneration.

The exhibition unfolds across eight thematic areas —petrochemical, vegetal, animal, microbiological, mineral, digital, intangible, and affective matter, offering a political ecology of objects. Through more than sixty micro-narratives, objects are activated as discursive agents, problematizing dominant material paradigms and opening pathways toward decarbonization, decolonization, and a new material consciousness. The scenography resists conventional museographic logics, instead juxtaposing historical artifacts with contemporary design strategies to provoke cognitive friction and critical reflection.

Using ALT Riviera by Giulia Boggio, marketing agency PHNX launched VENDOR, a startup that creates narratives and other content for sellers on the real estate market.

Soft Communication supports organisations and companies in the development and implementation of discrimination-sensitive communication. Together with a network of experts, Soft offers communication, counselling and training for everyone who believes that a successful approach should include as many people as possible.

Behind the “Office for Sensitive Communication” are the two softies Lara M. Gahlow and Marcel Wicker. The author, editor and cultural manager and the journalist and communications expert have shared values, vision and humour for many years – and from now on also soft.

Studiokwi has developed the corporate identity, logo and style guide using ALT Maria Clara and ALT Riviera by ALT.tf.

RÜDO is a unique black-and-white photo magazine focusing on the deep connections between people and the built environment. The magazine is published quarterly and offers an immersive experience with 52 carefully curated pages of black-and-white photography.

Issue 3, “Fragments of Space in the Course of Time” by Marco De Ieso, is described as follows:

The third issue, is a photographic narrative that takes the form of an anthropological exploration, with the aim of investigating the link that is supposed to exist between the living being and the environment in which it resides and inhabits. Where actions, tensions and movements are intertwined giving rise to an unchanging universe.

The magazine was designed by Black Skew using ALT Riviera, with texts written by Laura Riva, and printed in the UK. RÜDO is a collaboration between Stefano Samà of Uhm! Publishing and Black Skew, and is available at Antenne Books.

GERDEA is a research network that examines the interactions between social gender relations and far right politics. The research association examines dynamics, effects and ambivalences in the action of (far) right in the political debate about gender order.

Art direction and identity by Studiokwi:

The aim was a modern and loud design that stands out from the research context and at the same time appeals to target groups from academia and the general public. Good legibility, a bold font and exciting contrasts are the main focus. The result is a flexible design system with responsive logo variants, bright colors and icons.

The Guild started out by being Atlanta’s first co-living company, creating spaces for changemakers — entrepreneurs, artists, and community organizers — to live, work, gather and thrive. In addition to providing live/work spaces, their program targeted venture and personal development. ⁠

The Guild’s workshops and trainings cover everything from advanced business basics, to personal finance coaching, and even things like mindful meditation, to provide holistic support to these changemakers who work to positively impact their communities. Since then, we’ve evolved and grown, when it became clear that these changemakers were at the threat of being displaced due to gentrification. Our city is grappling with both residential and commercial gentrification, with legacy residents and businesses both at the frontline of displacement. This kind of development only serves to widen the already existing racial wealth gap. Instead, we take a community-centered approach to development. Our upcoming deals are focused on creating a pathway for community ownership.

Die kluge Schlange (“The Smart Snake”) is an “evening-long spectacle of design, drama and music” about Hortensia von Salis, conceived by LAUTESkollektiv.

Founded in 2019, LAUTESkollektiv consists of composer Stephanie Haensler and designer Laura Haensler. At the interface of their disciplines, they make socially relevant topics artistically tangible: contemporary music meets object installation, design questions composition, the audible is reflected in the visible.
