“Kapow is a jugendstil grotesk inspired by a thicket of late nineteenth and early twentieth century expressive sans-serifs. ¶ Kapow draws on the formalities of Breite Grotesk, the visual impact of Zeitungs Grotesk , the naïveté of Estonian street signage and the recherché curves of typefaces like Ronaldson Gothic, Secession, Chicago and Aviso. The thin terminals are based on drawings inspired by the cover lettering from a 1956 German published book Der Weg nach Lhasa. ¶ For contrast the accompanying italic is drawn directly from Lining Gothic Italic No. 524 as seen in the 1906 American Line Type Book published by American Type Founders Co. The design of Lining Gothic is closer to true italic forms than a typical oblique ‘italic’. It is both flowing and rhythmical and enjoys a stark contrast with the awkward and robust formality of Kapow roman.”
