Registered in May 1885. [Reichsanzeiger] An oldstyle serif shown by Bauer & Co as their own creation (“eigenes Erzeugnis”). Two variants: französischer Schnitt (“French cut”) is distinguished from englischer Schnitt (“English cut”) by diagonal in place of vertical contrast in ‘bcdepq’, ‘M’ with splayed legs, ‘C’ with bottom serif, ‘s’ with single-sided serifs, and non-ligning numerals as default. [1895 specimen] The sample is based on larger sizes of the English cut.
Note that many foundries carried similar designs, some of which were also called Mediäval-Antiqua. [Wetzig 1926–40]
