Mediäval-Antiqua (Bauer & Co.) in use

Mediäval-Antiqua (Bauer & Co.) in use. Registered in May 1885. [Reichsanzeiger] An oldstyle serif shown by Bauer & Co as their own creation (“eigenes Erzeugnis”). Two variants: französischer Schnitt (“French cut”) is distinguished from englischer Schnitt (“English cut”) by diagonal in place of vertical contrast in ‘bcdepq’, ‘M’ with splayed legs, ‘C’ with bottom serif, ‘s’ with single-sided serifs, and non-ligning numerals as default. [1895 specimen] The sample is based on larger sizes of the English cut.

Note that many foundries carried similar designs, some of which were also called Mediäval-Antiqua. [Wetzig 1926–40]

Shown here are the cover, the title pages, the foreword, and the opening pages for the four sections.

The main typefaces used for the book design are Preciosa and Carmen, two typefaces that were released by Bauer & Co. shortly before.
