A faux-Devanagari typeface that simulates the look of the Indic script, designed by Charles Papirtis and shown by Photo-Lettering as Taj Mahal in the ’63 Alphabet Supplement (1963). Features an alternate ‘i’ with a flipped dot.
Copied by Formatt as Maharajah [1981 catalog] and by Solotype as Shalimar. [Solo 1978]
Digitizations by Tim Ryan as Shalimar (Type Revivals, 1990s, copied by Soft Horizons as Shelly Maris) and by Robert Ethel as Samarkan (1993). The sample uses Samarkan, with tightened spacing and an acute as a stand-in for the flipped ‘i’ dot.
