This entry is for the bold condensed style of Deberny
& Peignot’s Europe type family, which is based on
a design that originated at Wagner & Schmidt, see Kristall-Grotesk schmalfett.
In other styles, Europe is a copy of Futura.
Compared to
Kristall-Grotesk schmalfett, Europe Gras
Étroit is distinguished by an M with high
vertex (as in
Rund-Grotesk and Universal Grotesk), a
non-descending J without top bar (as in
Universal Grotesk), a symmetrical u,
and a closed 4. It was released some time between
1929 (when the normal widths of Europe were released)
and 1934 (when the Film typeface was released, both being
shown together in an undated specimen book).
