NN Éditeur Italic in use

NN Éditeur Italic in use. Designed by Alexander Colby, loosely based upon an IBM Selectric typewriter face, see Light Italic. First released in 2007 with Gestalten as Lacrima, in three italics weights. Later moved to Milieu Grotesque. In 2010, the upright Lacrima Serif and Lacrima Senza (with sans-serif caps, no ball terminals on ‘cjkrsvwxz’ and a cursive ‘y’) were added, and Lacrima was renamed Lacrima Italic, now extended to five weights. Revised by Timo Gaessner in 2019.

Since June 2025, the typeface is available from Nouvelle Noire, now named NN Éditeur. This page is for the italic styles. See also NN Éditeur Serif and NN Éditeur Semi.

The exhibition reflects on the vanished city and memories through the commercial signs rescued by the collective in the neighbourhood where the art centre is located.

As the booklet reads:

in the face of Madrid's destruction: in the fire of what was, burns what will be

The inauguration took the form of a popular party with music, wine and the owners of the closed shops coming to see their signs saved from the dump at the last minute.

The ING Talent Award offers emerging, talented photographers in Europe a platform for showing their own work to an international audience.

The theme of the exhibition was Resilience, a personal story, which could be interpreted as staying strong in uncertain times. I translated this into typography and form by working with the font Labil Grotesk, making use of its alternative characters, so that a word can suddenly look unstable. It makes the design look sleek, but also playful. To give the identity a personal character I used Lacrima Italic – a serif with the raw characteristics of a typewriter typeface.

As a guideline for colors and shapes, I looked at the work of Andrea Grützner – one of the previous winners. With the shapes I made an abstract spatial design with lines that refers to a staircase – and the colors reflect the positive character of resilience.

Source: jellekoper.nl Pictures by temet.studio. License: All Rights Reserved.

Pictures by temet.studio. License: All Rights Reserved.

Source: jellekoper.nl Pictures by temet.studio. License: All Rights Reserved.

Pictures by temet.studio. License: All Rights Reserved.

Pictures by temet.studio. License: All Rights Reserved.

This post was originally published at Fonts In Use
