Designed by Morris Fuller Benton and released in regular (1908), Italic, Extra Condensed (1908), and Condensed (1909) styles. Originally the medium-weight members of ATF’s Gothics: Lightline Gothic is lighter (and Monotone Gothic wider), Franklin Gothic is bolder, Alternate Gothic has straight-sided rounds. News Gothic was later extended with Bold (John L. Renshaw, 1958), Bold Italic, [Reichardt] and Condensed Bold (Frank Bartuska, 1965) [Hutchinson] styles.
