Designed by Julius Herriet, Jr. for Boston Type Foundry in c.1888, as an extension of a series designed by Gustave F. Schroeder for Central, see Lafayette (extra condensed, 1885), Washington (bold, c.1886), and Jefferson (condensed).

Webster has an alternate ‘M’. It was also cast by Lehmann (as Валенсія / Valentzija) and Keystone (as Worcester) [Reichardt 2011].

Film versions were included in Photo-Lettering’s library (as Webster) and in Headliners’ Morgan Press Collection as F239.
