Designed by Morris F. Benton in 1914 in a single style. Working title was Round Roman [McGrew]. Released by ATF in 1920 [ATF ad, late 1970s]. Named Bullfinch in England. [Reichardt]
Revived by Ed Benguiat for Photo-Lettering as Souvenir Graphic (5 weights) and Souvenir Balloon (2 weights, less contrast). The former was soon after expanded by Benguiat for ITC, see ITC Souvenir (1970, used for the sample). The phototype version “achieved such popularity that it was later cut on matrices for use on Linotype, by Matrotype in England, in regular and demi-bold weights with matching italics”. It also “prompted ATF to reissue the face for a short time in 1972”. [McGrew]
