Romanée in use

Romanée in use. Drawn by Jan van Krimpen and cut by Paul H. Rädisch, referencing a typeface attributed to Christoffel van Dijck named Kleine Text Romein No. 2. [DTL] The Roman cut was released in 1928 by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen. The Italic followed in 1949.

An unfinished digital version was undertaken in 1995 by Peter Matthias Noordzij and Fred Smeijers for TEFF [Peiran Tan]. Holger Königsdörfer’s digital interpretation started at the KABK in 2008 was released with Lazydogs in 2018 as LD Renommée. Mark Askam made a digital revival for his personal use at the Chestnut Press. So did Jason Dewinetz for the Greenboathouse Press in 2010/2011 (used for his print of Stanley Morison’s First Principles of Typography, 2012). Peiran Tan made another unreleased digitization based on the Odyssey of Homer (used for the sample).

Enschedé of Haarlem, one of the longest-existing printing companies. One work this initiative has now made accessible everywhere is the monumental 1978 edition of Dr. Charles Enschedé’s 1908 book Typefoundries in the Netherlands, translated into English and edited by Harry Carter, Netty Hoeflake and Lotte Hellinga and printed by Bram de Does. (See discussion on TypeDrawers here, here.)

The book is handset in metal type, Jan van Krimpen's Romanée. Weighing in at 4.5kg, it includes extensive showings of historic metal types in Enschedé’s collections dating back as far as the fifteenth century, including full character sets and resettings of entire ornamented title pages and page layouts. These were mostly cast and typeset for the 1908 edition: due to the survival of the standing metal type they could be reprinted again for the 1978 edition. The paper was specified by de Does. It's an astonishing experience seeing historic typefaces cast and printed with modern technology, frequently revealing a staggering crispness the printing technology of their time often could not show.

De Does' design uses Romaneé with footnotes and section headings in the margin. A Lombardic capital-style C (see discussion below) is used as a bracket to mark additional information breaking into Enschedé's text. The body text is not set in columns.

Enschedé's 1893 commemoration of the foundry's 150th anniversary has also been digitised by Google.

Noord-Hollands Archief. License: All Rights Reserved.

Page layout, with footnotes at the bottom of the page.

Noord-Hollands Archief. License: All Rights Reserved.

Pages 404-5, display layout of modern-face types

Noord-Hollands Archief. License: All Rights Reserved.

Interlaced capitals of c. 1578, probably by Hendrik van den Keere (see John A. Shown in the images, the Odyssey is hard-bound with a dark blue cloth surface, contained in a yellow slipcase.

The book title "The Odyssey of Homer" only appears on the spine in all caps, embossed in gold. Other than drop caps, there is no illustration inside. The pages' top edge are gold glided, and the reading edges are deckled. Some pages are not even cut open.

There are four kinds of watermark on many pages, indicating this paper is specially made for the job: lettering "The Limited Editions Club"; lettering "Homer's Odyssey"; ornament; and human figure.

This Homer was also the first use of Van Krimpen's own typeface, Romanée, casted at 16-point. Romanée was an upright style originally conceived to accompany Enschedé's Kleine Text Cursyf ("[for] Small Text Italic" in English), rediscovered in its archive. At that point, Van Krimpen had yet to design his own Romanée italic. Therefore the introduction, which is set completely in italic, uses Monotype Van Dijck.

This book has an edition of 1500, all signed by Van Krimpen himself. Photos are taken from my own copy, No. 352.

Peter Matthias Noordzij of TEFF (The Enschedé Font Foundry) partially digitized Romanée with Fred Smeijers in 1995. This digital Romanée was based on the 16-point metal, and only has an upright. It was used to set a Van Krimpen biography, titled Adieu æsthetica & Mooie pagina's, and also a subsequent small booklet, presumably an exhibition catalog, titled The Aesthetic World of Jan van Krimpen. Perhaps because the italics were never completely digitized, TEFF's digital Romanée was never released.

In TypeCon 2016 I met Smeijers, and asked him why it stalled. He responded, "[he and PMN] had a difference of vision" in how the italics should be digitized.

<img
