Engraved by Thorowgood and first shown in 1839 as Sans
Surryphs Shaded. Revived by Stephenson Blake in 1948 as
Sans Serif Shaded. [Millington 2002] “A three-dimensional

Shaded of 1834 (with light and shadow reversed).” [HiH]
Sold by Renault as Antiques blanches. [Reichardt 2011]
Available from VGC as Sans Serifs Shaded. [VGC 1972] Also carried by Letraset and
Mecanorma [Mecanorma c.1975] as Sans Serif

offered Sanserif Shade Blockshadow A and B (the
former with thinner outline) and the grunged Batten
Shaded (2 styles).
In addition to HiH’s digital version named Thorowgood Sans

Ultinoid (Pizzadude, 2006) is a weathered variation. Maszynista (RMU, 2010) adds two styles and a lowercase, but its shadow is less pronounced. Borough Grotesk (Lewis McGuffie, 2017) offers a solid Fill style for 2-color effects.
