Produced by Bodleian Library Publishing, Type Designers of the Twentieth Century written and designed by David Jury explores the many developments typefaces have experienced through the twentieth century. The book presents 37 type designers working at different times and with different technologies, how they have reacted to technological and cultural changes and the typefaces they created.

The book is typeset in Enigma Text with Shaker used for captions. Cover and title page feature Eurostile.

Parenthesis is the journal of the Fine Press Book Association. This issue was published in Spring 2023, edited and designed by David Jury. A handsomely produced journal of 64 pages at 210×300 mm. It is set using Enigma Text Regular at 10pt with Enigma Text Heavy at 12pt for headings. Authors’ names and captions are set in Shaker Regular.

The Saint Patrick Centre in Downpatrick, County Down holds the world’s only permanent exhibition dedicated to the patron saint of Ireland.

Tandem were brought on board to refresh the exhibition, by conceptualising new films and animations, family-friendly activities and reflections on the Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Creating a sense of arrival with a new vibrant exhibition entrance, we reworked the narrative content to make it more cohesive, taking visitors on a journey through Saint Patrick’s early life and captivity in Ireland. Our approach breathes fresh life into the story of the slave who became a saint, author of the first written word in this country and now a cultural icon known the world over.

We used Enigma Text as the crisp, clean impression resembles a calligraphy based script. The exhibition uses Patrick’s own words, and these were highlighted in the italic version of the typeface. As the type designer stated: ‘Its sharp detailing imparts an assertive elegance.’ We wanted this for the tone of voice of the space.

We used accessible san-serif FS Me, developed in association with Mencap, for the more heavy body copy that sits beside the title and headlines.

Born from the restrictions of the 2020 lockdown, The Buildings of Green Park is a brilliant record by author Andrew Jones of a host of architectural structures in London’s Mayfair and St. James’s. A double page spread is given to each building and includes historical text, images, and documents. Beautifully designed using Enigma and Trilogy font families to their full.

Enigma Fine is used for headings with the general reading matter in Enigma Text. The mapping uses Trilogy Sans supported Egyptian. The typographic design continues the mix of the three font styles throughout with Trilogy Egyptian indicating the building number, Trilogy Sans for caption, secondary text, and page numbering. Typographic detailing includes small capitals, lining, non-lining, and small capital figure sets and sorts.

This book was published to accompany the exhibition El Greco at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, (October 2003 to January 2004), and at The National Gallery, London (February to May 2004). Body text is set in Enigma with chapter head and artwork titles in Shaker. Bliss is used for artwork details and notes.

Since 2011, Glyndebourne uses Enigma as the primary font in their visual identity. Trilogy Sans is deployed as a sans serif complement to Enigma, “for subheads, captions, tables, and footnotes: whenever typographic variety will make [their] communications more readable.” The logo is a tweaked version of Aspect, another typeface by Jeremy Tankard.

The Goring is an historic luxury hotel in London. Jeremy Tankard’s distinguished Enigma was chosen as the typeface for the visual identity — an appropriate choice for The Goring’s style, which encompasses “an Englishness, traditional yet entirely in tune with the 21st century.”
