Graphic design and layout by Cecilia Gérard for a 288-page book about artistic upheaval in Lyon, France, at the beginning of the 20th century. Made under the direction of Denis Vaginay and to be published by Éditions Libel together with the Brouill’Arts association.

The design system for Simply Organic’s high-end spice line, Single Origin, draws inspiration from vintage apothecary labels. Simply Organic’s main brand recedes in the background and allows each spice’s distinct qualities to take center stage: the geographic origin, cultivation methods, and distinct potent flavor qualities.

To accomplish this, both the standard and condensed widths of Gza employed for their vintage-inspired qualities. Additionally, the monospaced cut of Founders Grotesk is utilized for its typewriter aesthetic. The declaration of weight is added in Tungsten Compressed.

The Joseph Binder Award is an international competition for graphic design and illustration. It is named after one of Austria’s most outstanding graphic designers.

Joseph Binder once said, “The process of creation is unknown, we wish to find out.” Bringing this process to the forefront, we highlighted three aspects well known to all designers: curiosity, focus, and fame.

Based on his iconic poster designs and special use of color, form, and perspective, we take these three aspects of the creative process and place them at the center of our design for the Joseph Binder Award 2022.

The tradition is to choose one of the winners to create the design for the following award. The design concept had to be related to the work of Joseph Binder. The challenge was to create a concept and design that gathers attention in the media noise of our creative industries target group. The design needed to be adaptable for an award show, exhibition, book, animated film, and conventional media.

The definition of a narrative created a storyline that helped the audience to identify with. In order to get more attention, we created three expressive and bold visuals which we also animated for digital channels. We developed a design system that allowed us to design the diverse range of needed touch points.

maat ext. (read: “maat extended”) is a content platform launched in September 2020 by the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) in Lisbon that aggregates, connects and expands the reach of the museum’s actions across the digital sphere.

A companion to the website redesigned in line with the revamped visual language of maat, this is a digital space where different forms of creative output coexist, some of which are developed by and with the collaborators involved in the museum’s programming and others that are native to this realm.

Headlines are set in Gza Super, and its “Regular” size style is used for body copy. The monospaced sans serif is Messina Sans Mono. The contents are organised by format type, as in long-form writing and visual essays, libraries of meanings, resources, online cinema, bulletins and news, to name just a few, while topics provide thematically specific reading threads across the platform. All of which generates resonances, and further links and reflection interwoven with the on-site events organised by the museum.

maat ext. is an experiment and an effort towards defying the time-based metrics of offline content consumption in order to produce a space for knowledge production, research and dialogue that can empower institutional practice to an intellectually flexible and creatively temperamental mode of contemporary storytelling.

I Search For You Still is a photo book collaboration between Melbourne-based photographer Dominic Xavier and graphic designer Yarron Frauenfelder. The book showcases photographs from the often misunderstood Middle Eastern nation of Iran, focusing on the beauty of the daily rituals in which its culture protects. An accompanying poem by Kaveh Akbari explores what it means to be a part of the Persian diaspora.

The cover is bound by a linen cloth with foiled type, to bring tactility to the reading experience. A loose and detached typographic structure alludes to a sense of wandering and discovery, mimicking the narrative sequence of the photographs. The book is set in Gza.

A former Augustinian convent became August – a modern-day sanctuary that embodies its sacred soul while charming one-and-all with modernist touches in every intricate detail. August is an ambitious restoration with the sole purpose to be a meeting point in the neighbourhood, and deliver an experience to remember for travelers of all ilk.

The geometric and functional character of Euclid Circular A fits the project perfectly.
Its straightforward shapes are a reference to the rigour and purity that were once fundamental values in the convent. Euclid is paired with the characteristic Gza which enhances the overall branding with its distinctive sharp, triangular serifs. The room numbers are hand-painted.

La Gran Bissa de Milàn (“the big/great snake of Milan” in Milanese dialect) is a multidisciplinary printed quest by Tazi Zine that put together illustrators, graphic designers, researchers and poets around the iconic heraldic coat of arms of the Visconti family, which became part of the visual culture of the city of Milan.

The project, printed in a limited edition of 150 copies, contains three short stories (7×11cm), one research of 80 pages that investigates the use of the Biscione in graphics (17×24cm); a fanzine containing 15 illustrations (15×23cm); a fanzine with nine illustrations (15×11.5cm); a fanzine with 18 illustrations (11.5×15cm) and eleven posters (30×40cm).

Together, the various covers form one big magazine cover with the title set in Gza (Out of the Dark). Throughout the publications, Surt (Blaze Type) is used from headlines to copy; Offset Mono Grotesk and Offset Mono Grotesk by Milan-based designer Giuseppe Tangaro are mixed in the headlines of the publication in the last image.

Narcos & Homes is a photobook showing a project by photographer Yamile Calderón named “Domestic at large”. From Yamile Calderón’s website:

This project is very connected to Calderon’s life experience of growing up in Colombia during the blossom years of narcotraffic dealing, with the imaginary and aesthetics values that came with it in Colombian society. This was her starting point to work with the project “Domestic at Large”, in which she approaches the drug trafficking problem from a domestic perspective. She took pictures of the properties of mafia bosses in Colombia that have been confiscated by the government. These images reveal ambivalence between the decadent, luxuriance in contrast with the emptiness of the houses. At the same time there is a confrontation between the way media presents this phenomena and how these photographs approach the everyday life of these people with their families, telling stories through the traces of people.

Phuture West Bookings is a bookings agency from Rotterdam, and we were asked to develop their website. We created a clear landing page where all the attention is focused on the artists.

Because we mainly used type, the typefaces had to define and carry the atmosphere of the website. This became a combination between a characteristic, stylish and legible typeface: Gza with its pointed shapes and drop shaped ball terminals. For navigation and other content we used the modern Suisse Int'l – comparable to Helvetica or Univers, but somewhat more robust in its details.

To get into the mood of their music, each artist can be given their own colour scheme. This is visible when you hover their names on the homepage and shows the variety of the artists.

Alias Harbour has been used for various independent, arts-related projects in Nottingham. These include the identity for the Castle Ruins art exhibition, and artworks by Nottingham-based artist Martin Rayment.

Harbour was also used for the Notts Zine Library exhibition, 2018, which included N to M zine, by Nottingham-based studio Waste. In the booklet, Harbour is paired with other typefaces including Gza and LL Circular [see comments].

Dualist is the first 100% reversible parkas brand, launched in Paris in September 2019. Graphic, urban, high-standard and designed in an eco-responsible way, Dualist parkas were designed by Deborah Janicek, with over 20 years' experience in premium and luxury brands, in product and general management positions.

From the beginning of the project, we were approached to work on the identity of the brand, from naming to creative direction. The logo is based on a homemade typographic design, with fixed width, high contrast, and the monogram D is subtly duplicated according to precise alignment rules; the whole ensures that the typographic block has a perfect balance, combining power and finesse.

We have developed a radical and unpretentious graphic territory, with raw and refined applications, meticulously worked. The typefaces chosen, Protokoll and Gza from Out Of The Dark (Zurich), enhance the overall graphic design of the campaigns, packaging and the website.

Banger is a quarterly music magazine featuring monthly gig listings, edited by Liv Sidall. It was created by our studio (c-ll-ct-v-ly) as an opportunity to do some self-initiated work about a topic we all enjoyed and experienced daily. We distributed the magazine around Shoreditch, at Rough Trade and a few other shops, to get more people reading it.

We wanted the magazine to be really experimental with the typography, a chance to be as creative as we wanted. This is why we chose Marc Rouault’s Trois Mille, a typeface with each weight having a unique style to it. TroisMille is intended to be used at gigantic sizes: “Make the logo bigger” is its credo. It is designed with flexibility in mind.

We chose Founders Grotesk Mono for body text as we felt it was a good match against the big and bold fonts. The logotype is made out of various weights of Druk. The Brainchild Festival poster additionally uses Gza.

Almost all hotels in Kazakhstan’s capital are based on the same international standards, which has created a landscape of anonymous, sterile, and ultimately forgettable overnight stays. The 71°East (Astana’s longitude) would fill a unique niche in this otherwise corporate dominated space: a hotel brand that combines local charm with cosmopolitan elegance. It would offer a cultural hotspot for local residents, business travelers, and backpackers alike – an inspiring point of contact in the world’s second-coldest capital city.

Kazakhstan has a rich cultural heritage and is known for its breathtaking nature. Astana, on the other hand, is known as a modern international business city with dynamic modern architecture. The balance between historical traditions, modern city life, old and new, local and international, has been the breeding ground on which we have developed 71°East’s brand. The entire design system plays with the contrasts of different worlds: The factual Futura meets the playful serif Gza; delicate illustrations meet bold ornamental patterns, elegance and class fuse with humor and wit.

This project has not been realized.

The Spicy Radish is a family-owned meal delivery service that provides fully-prepared meals to busy people, helping save time with healthy dishes that don’t sacrifice quality or tastiness. The Spicy Radish refreshed their brand aiming to add some spice and sophistication to their look, while helping to clarify their messaging.

The brand identity utilizes GZA for headlines, Noe Text for body copy and GT America and GT America Mono for wordmarks and supportive type.

Bang Bang is part izakaya, part street eatery, bringing the gritty old-school alleyways of Tokyo’s Shinjuku district to Darling Square’s Steam Mill Lane. Walk through the bullet-sprayed roller doors and into a neon lit open kitchen and bar, grab a stool behind the curtains of the yatai stall, pick up a Japanese soda from the vending machine wall, escape the hustle and bustle in the hidden tatami room, or sing your heart out in the glass karaoke box.

Harley Johnston Design worked with interior design firm Interior Life to create this Tokyo themed bar and restaurant. The goal was to mix old and new, authentic and imagined. As such items like the drink vending machines are all recreated from real references, the floor markings were also designed using Tokyo references. These sit along side murals by James Jirat Patradoon and Enku Shoji, environmental graphics and neon signage. The result is an overwhelming of the senses that some have mentioned feels like being in Tokyo.

For the logo type we chose ITC Serif Gothic black for its Japanese feel: the bold shapes and fine serifs remind us of the roofs found on some Japanese temples and the headwear of ancient samurai. We wanted the overall theme to feel like this bar could really exist hidden away in Tokyo – a tall order – and we imagined the typefaces that would be used would be older default fonts, hence the typewriter choice, Pitch Sans. For the headline we started with the Japanese font Toppan Bunkyu Midashi Mincho extra bold for its old style and sharp serifs. We then found a Latin match in Gza which we felt had a slightly off-kilter feel like you often find in the Latin characters of Asian fonts.
