Tousan was the name used by Allen Toussaint early in his career. This album with instrumentals was released by RCA Records in 1958. The cover photography is by Nolan A. Marshall.

The typography combines Caslon No. 540 Italic with what looks like Condensed Title Gothic No. 11. The tall gothic caps used for “WILD” are from an unidentified typeface.

Soul Trombone is an album by American jazz trombonist Curtis Fuller featuring performances recorded in 1961 for the Impulse! label. From Wikipedia:

The Allmusic review by Ken Dryden awarded the album 4 stars stating “The solos on this hard bop disc are superb, with Fuller giving his musicians plenty of room, while his own work is first-rate. Three of the six pieces are originals and even if they never caught on, there is no filler present anywhere”.

Condensed Title Gothic No. 11 in red and blue and with inline images for a best-of compilation by Pérez “King of the Mambo” Prado (1916–1989), released in 1960. Tony Wilds reviewed Big Hits by Prado for AllMusic:

Big Hits actually is a powerhouse anthology: the first definitive, stereo collection of mambo hits. All were re-recorded for stereo in “new arrangements” as the jacket advertises. A couple originally were recorded in stereo, e.g., “Patricia” and “Why Wait,” but were not available in stereo, even as late as 1960. The most desirable selections are “Guaglione” and “Paris”; the latter may have been non-LP until this (Francis Bay covered it to even greater effect). Overall, the presentation is not as strong as it could be. A later issue has the tunes in different order and with the trademark organ mixed higher. Still, Big Hits is easy to find and very worthwhile.

Mel Bay’s series of music education books with “chords in photo-diagram form”, or “picture & diagram form”, was first published in the 1950s, see an issue dated 1959. The series design shown here was introduced around 1961.

The publisher’s name is presented in Hans Bohn’s Orplid with its round-top forms for A and M. Various bold sans serifs of narrow proportion were employed for the main title, including Condensed Title Gothic No. 11 (tenor banjo), Franklin Gothic Extra Condensed (mandolin), and Futura Condensed (baritone uke). The subtitle is added in Venus Extended, and the publisher’s address in Futura Bold.

After the war, Bay was asked to write instructional material on the guitar for GIs wishing to learn music under the GI Bill. When he approached the three major music publishers in New York City, they turned him down, saying there was no future in the guitar. In 1947, he formed Mel Bay Publications and wrote the first book, The Orchestral Chord System for Guitar. This book is still in print under the title Rhythm Guitar Chord System. His Modern Guitar Method was written shortly after in 1948. After the success of Elvis Presley in the early 1950s, the guitar became more popular, helping to ensure the success of the company. For years Bay traveled from town to town, talking to guitar teachers and players, and showing them his publications. He claimed to have known every guitar teacher in America on a first-name basis.

The back covers feature a range of period faces. This one has Brush Script, Lydian, Cloister, and Flash. “Fun with the Baritone Uke” pairs Franklin Gothic with an unidentified bold casual sans with flared stems.

A comical ad for Pabst with a headline set in Condensed Title Gothic No. 11 and body copy in Futura.

A series of ads designed by Dorothy Shepard in 1937 for Pabst Export Beer, another line from the makers of Pabst Blue Ribbon. The airbrush illustrations are in Shepard’s modern trademark style with streamlined shapes. Headlines and body copy are set on an angle, which was just starting to gain favor in advertising and magazine layouts. The two black-and-white ads include Futura’s distinctive fi and fl ligatures.

This LP by the accordion-led instrumental group The Three Suns included a variety of Christmas hits. Condensed Title Gothic No. 11 for the group name and album title. Alternate Gothic No. 1 for the song titles. Released in 1952. Very soon, rock-n-roll would come in and change the face of music.

Actor and singer Sheb Wooley released this Christmas sequel to his hit single “The Purple People Eater" some months after its success. Wooley was in movies and TV, mostly Westerns. He's also credited with performing the Wilhelm scream.

Second City Volume 1, Number 6 by a group of students from Chicago in late 1968. It mostly covered social issues of the day.
