As the title States of Mind / Beyond the Image (Czech: Stavy mysli / Za obrazem) itself suggests, the permanent exhibition of GASK – Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region is not a classically conceived presentation of the gallery’s collection. Instead of being an ‘encyclopaedic’ sequence of artworks arranged chronologically or stylistically, the exhibition is based on the diverse spectrum of a person’s emotional and mental life. The starting point is provided by thematic pairs – either contradictory or complementary – to which the exhibited works relate (such as joy/grief, equilibrium/tension, alienation/meditation). This creates a ‘polemical space’ between two clearly defined dimensions of the inner life of humanity. The aim of the exhibition is for viewers to understand artistic expression as something that speaks about timelessly relevant aspects of human existence.

BC Thomas & Ruhller is used for all typography, from the big title that was stretched to fit an arch, to the small type that indicates month names and moon stadia. The typeface is named after a Dutch clownesk theatre duo of the same name and was designed in 1985 by Aleš Najbrt for their identity (1989) and used for their posters ever since.

Thomas & Ruhller – yin & yang, two sad clowns from the land of the tulip, jugglers of taste and artists of the future, where the difference between high and low doesn’t exist. Aleš Najbrt designed many posters, invitations, calendars and programmes for these fine equilibrists.

The template for the Thomas & Ruhller typeface was designed in 1985 and was originally handdrawn with ink on paper. The typeface was primarily created for use in advertising, promoting and marketing the two performers’ tours and shows. The first digitization covered only a basic character set. The new digitization for Briefcase features additional and alternative glyphs.
