I've just found this magazine from Peru in Budapest, only God knows why.

Textual is the journal of the Peruvian National Institute of Culture. Concerned with literature, humanities, and arts, it was published between 1971 and 1975. CEDOC (Centro de Documentación de la Biblioteca Central UNMSM) has digitizations of all ten issues. The logo is based on Amelia, in lowercase letters and with filled-in counters.

Number 9 is dedicated to philosopher, educator and journalist Augusto Salazar Bondy (1925–1974). Display typefaces used in this issue include Michel, Thalia, and Ludlow Garamond. Body text is set in Helvetica and Permanent, with drop caps from Neo Script.

Phaidon 20th-century Art: Expressionism

Michel Waxmann’s 1969 multiline Michel in use for a book about Expressionism, edited by Maly and Dietfried Gerhardus and published by Phaidon in 1979:

Starting with the forerunners of Expressionism: Gauguin, Van Gogh, the French ‘Fauves’ and individualists such as the Norwegian Munch and the Belgian Ensor, the book surveys the work of the painters belonging to the German groups ‘Die Brücke’ and ‘Der Blaue Reiter’, independent painters such as the Austrians Kubin and Kokoschka, and finally the development of Expressionism into the ‘New Objectivity’, as represented by painters such as Max Beckmann, Otto Dix and Georg Grosz.

The sans used on the back cover is Univers.

Published by Gyldendal in 1972, Hare, hvorhen? (“Rabbit, where to?”) is the Norwegian edition of John Updike’s 1971 novel Rabbit Redux. It’s the follow-up to Rabbit, Run (1960), known in Norwegian as Hare, hopp!

The cover design by Peter Haars brings together two display faces from 1969 which both carry first names starting with M: while the multiline Michel is named after its designer, Michel Waxmann, the inflated Marianna by Joseph Churchward got its name from one of the designer’s daughters. The author’s name is in ITC Pioneer.

Fonts from the Flea Market #1265

Michel Waxmann’s Michel (Hollenstein/Letraset, 1969) in tightly spaced caps, on the sleeve of an undated single (c. 1972?) by The Equators. Provided that the cover photograph shows the artists (plus a dog), this group is not to be confused with the UK reggae band by the same name. Design by Hans Marti, a graphic artist in Basel who worked for Tell Record from around 1971.

#1 Pacific 8 Conference Football ’73 ft. ITC Busorama

Touchdown Illustrated is an American college football magazine by Touchdown Publications, Inc. It was started in 1973 as the official publication of the Pacific 8 Conference and its member universities. In its first year, Touchdown Illustrated simultaneously published nine issues, all edited by Ralph M. Grady and David A. Duncan. No. 1 covered the Pacific 8 Conference in general. The other ones were dedicated to the eight university teams.

For the covers and the headlines, each issue uses a different display typeface or two. Most of the featured faces had been released in the years before. All of them were included in Letraset’s range of typefaces for dry transfer lettering.

Going further to the psychedelic world of Erkin Koray, this super weird sleeve uses Michel Waxman’s Michel on front and Rockwell on back.

Michel has also been used on several other releases by Koray and can be seen as one of his signature typeface.

Mackenna Aranya (1969) Hungarian movie poster

Hungarian poster (1972) for the 1969 western film Mackenna’s Gold, directed by J. Lee Thompson, featuring Gregory Peck, Omar Sharif, Telly Savalas, Ted Cassidy, Camilla Sparv and Julie Newmar in lead roles, with music by Quincy Jones. DIN A1, offset printed.

The title uses the rarely seen bold weight of Michel Waxmann’s Michel. This multiline typeface was distributed by the French company Hollenstein phototypo, and shown in three styles in their 1974 catalog, see the sample below. The maigre style was adopted by Letraset and became the most popular one. The demi-gras weight is shown in Lettera 4 (1972) as Michel gras, with a 1969 date. This book compiled by Armin Haab and Walter Haettenschweiler may have been the source for the letterforms on the poster. The Michel series is completed by a simplified 2-line style.

Three Dog Night – “The Show Must Go On” German single cover

This sleeve was designed for the German release of Three Dog Night’s cover of the Leo Sayer song “The Show Must Go On”. Three Dog Night’s version was a top 5 hit in the United States. Michel Waxman’s Michel is used for the titles.

Instant Production Music is a series of records released the by University Of Wisconsin-Extension between 1975 and 1980 in at least eighteen volumes. The two records by guitarist Lonnie Knight (1948–2017), vol. 7 (1977) and vol. 11 (1978), use the same basic design by Howard L. Austin, with all-lowercase Michel.

Caterina Valente – “So Bin Ich Zu Dir” German single cover

Caterina Valente is a French-born Italian vocalist. Valente has had a successful worldwide career in music, especially in Germany. She also starred in the CBS variety show The Entertainers in 1964, alongside Carol Burnett and Bob Newhart in the United States.

The type used on the cover for this 7″ single is Michel Waxman’s eponymous Michel for Hollenstein/Letraset.
