Scorpio & Hoopla in use

Scorpio & Hoopla in use. Scorpio is first shown in Photo-Lettering’s Psychedelitypes (1968) as Psychedelitype 5882. No lowercase. Their Ballard is the same design with the bottom rounds cut off.

Hoopla is a very similar design, but with rounder bottom (see esp. ‘C’ or ‘S’) and a (non-descending) lowercase. Shown in a Lettergraphics catalog from 1976 (but not yet in one from 1969).

Various digital interpretations including “BellBottom (Fantazia, many anon), BellBottom.Laser (Lorvad [1991]), Groovy (A&L), Balloon (Brendel). Shown in Solo Art Deco Alphabet book as Colonel Hoople.” [Solopedia] Doobie (2006) is a commercial digitization and used for this sample.

This is the Book Club edition published by Nelson Doubleday in 1973. The interior has black-and-white illustrations by Frazetta, too.

They vary from clowns, animals and strange creatures, to food items.” (McDonald’s Wiki)

The front of the box with the “convenient handle” shows Ronald McDonald and his gang: Captain Crook, Officer Big Mac, Mayor McCheese, and Hamburglar. The type is Hoopla, an amorphous film typeface that probably originated at Lettergraphics. PLINC’s earlier (?) Scorpio from 1968 is virtually identical, except for its slightly boxier bottoms in C or S.
