US one sheet poster by an unknown designer for the 1997 spy comedy film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. The film is directed by Jay Roach and stars Mike Myers in a dual role as the titular Austin Powers and his arch-enemy Dr. Evil. It is the first film in the Austin Powers series.

The film's title and tagline are set in Anzeigen Grotesk — potentially using the digital version from Linotype. The distorted psychedelic text occupying the rest of the poster is based on a type which was originally known as Scorpio or Hoopla, but is also known under various other aliases in digital form, such as BellBottom, Groovy, Balloon or Doobie.

New branding for Sydney’s Akasha Brewing. A new logo, consisting of an impactful hop and triangle motif, was created to accompany a direct and immediate wordmark set in Linotype Franklin Gothic Condensed. The core range of five flagship beers consists of a minimal monochrome design.

The Akasha Project sub-brand is where the team explores their art at its most exciting – a celebration of the different, the unexpected, the alluring – with each beer allowed to manifest its own unique character.

The Akasha Project cans play with a range of fonts from vintage classics such as Arabesque, Hobo, Gill Kayo and Roberta, to retro-revival typefaces like Break Maiden’s Vacation. Sharp Type’s Beatrice is used for all information.

Arnold Böcklin is the typeface used for the logo of That ’70s Show. Originally released in 1904, this Art Nouveau design saw a revival in the late 1960s and 1970s.

The opening titles show the cast riding in in Eric Forman’s Vista Cruiser and singing along with the show's theme song. The credits are set in Hobo.

The letterforms are typically shown with multiple colored contours and a gradient fill.

On the covers of this DVD edition, the season numbers are set in (a digital version of) the rounded bottom-heavy Scorpio, a quintessential 1970s typeface.

A bold instance of Frank Frazetta’s jacket illustrations for Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “John Carter of Mars” adventure novels, which helped revive the character in the late 1960s/early 1970s, here paired with a classic “psychedelic” font, Scorpio, which seems to hint at the many shag-carpeted and airbrushed vans whose sides were so often, in that era, illuminated with Frazetta facsimiles. This is the Book Club edition published by Nelson Doubleday in 1973. The interior has black-and-white illustrations by Frazetta, too.

Cookie box, 1975

Cookie packaging from McDonaldland, “a fantasy world used in a large collection of McDonald’s commercials from 1971 to 2003, featuring a magical world setting inhabited by many quirky characters. They vary from clowns, animals and strange creatures, to food items.” (McDonald’s Wiki)

The front of the box with the “convenient handle” shows Ronald McDonald and his gang: Captain Crook, Officer Big Mac, Mayor McCheese, and Hamburglar. The type is Hoopla, an amorphous film typeface that probably originated at Lettergraphics. PLINC’s earlier (?) Scorpio from 1968 is virtually identical, except for its slightly boxier bottoms in C or S.

Over on Flickr, Jason Liebig (@CollectingCandy) has shared several cookie box images from his astonishing collection of vintage packaging, including an evolution chart featuring the boxes from 1972, 1974, and 1975, and a full timeline from 1972 to 1987 — showing that Hoopla was around at least since 1972.
