After a 1837 showing in a New York City fair, this wood type cut by Edwin Allen was shown in George Nesbitt’s 1838 catalog and known simply as “Gothic”. [RRK] Minor variations were offered by many manufacturers under the same name.
Phototype versions include Morgan No. 25, shown by Haber and Castcraft, and Winchester from Phil’s. Digital versions include Gothic Nesbitt, Public Notice JNL (used for this sample), OL Smokler (with added lowercase), and a cleaned-up version in Champion Gothic Heavyweight.
