Karuta is a traditional Japanese card game where players listen to short descriptions read aloud from a reader’s card. Each turn, players race to grab the matching card with the corresponding picture or text, and the player with the most cards at the end wins.

Font Karuta is a variation designed for typography enthusiasts. Instead of pictures, the reader announces the font name and description on the reader’s card, and players compete to pick up the card displaying that font. The player who collects the most cards wins the game.

This edition is the “extension package” featuring only blackletter designs.

The box front features the title in Amador, with Clairvaux for the list of included typefaces. The Japanese font appears to be DNP Shuei ShogoMincho. The Font Karuta logo is in Akko.

The German-language game instructions are set in Gutenberg Textura with a headline in Blackmoor, in caps of alternating colors.

Bella triste is a German literary magazine that showcases the work of emerging and established authors. The 65th issue explores the fusion of contemporary literature and minimalist aesthetics and indulges in a fairy-tale theme.

Designed by Handina Murandu and Vivien Sorrentino, the magazine uses Romie Regular and Italic (designed by Margot Lévêque). The title combines the sans serif ABC Monument Grotesk (designed by Larissa Kasper and Rosario Florio) with Dan Rhatigan’s Astloch. In the latter, the S was modified to be more symmetrical.

The issue number on the cover is based on UnifrakturMaguntia, with customized numerals. Inside the magazine, there’s also Spencerio (by Jérémie Hornus and Julie Soudanne), JAF Herb (by Tim Ahrens), as well as more of the other typefaces.

Cracker Island is the eighth studio album by the British virtual band Gorillaz, released on February 2023. JAF Herb is used throughout the campaign for Cracker Island and for the graphics for the World Tour 2022.

Published by Nucleo, Unnützes Wissen für Potter-Fans (“Useless knowledge for Potter fans”) ist set in JAF Herb and Arek.

The recently redesigned package of the South Tyrolean Bela Badia cheese from Mila features JAF Herb joined by Garamond Premier (with some customised details) and Monotype Corsiva. For the small print, Myriad Condensed is used.

Gazoline is a Canadian rock band from Quebec.

On their latest album Gazoline III, JAF Herb Bold is used for their band name, alongside Avenir for smaller texts. The label name Duprince appears to be based on Bank-Note Italic, an all-caps italic Scotch Roman with split shade. JAF Herb is also used for the band logo in other media such as music videos and the website.

Celebrator Creative created a new visual identity for Pizza Jeans. Words from their portfolio post:

Refining the customer experience for the iconic Atlanta institution, Pizza Jeans. This study took us on a voyage through the calm nostalgia of ’90s community dinners, the pre-fab exoticism of mid-century red sauce joints, and into the heart of ’80s camp – including the development of an ersatz Italian fashion label.

The main branding typeface is F37 Drago by F37 Foundry. For the menu, it’s paired with New Spirit by Newlyn. The “Spaghetti Dinner” poster series combines JAF Herb (Just Another Foundry) with Fino Sans (TypeTogether).

The Bacchus Pub in Bozeman, Montana has renewed its identity for its re-opening in 2019. The new logo features two blackletter-inspired typefaces: Algo FY is used for the pub name; additional information uses (boldened) JAF Herb. From Armstrong Marketing Solutions:

Before it reopened, we worked with the new owners to refine the brand and eliminate any confusion about its heritage (Bacchus was the name of the Roman god of agriculture, wine and fertility) and move it back toward its German pub roots. Through visuals, like an updated German stein logo and usage of the German blackletter type, we infused the pub’s heritage back into the Bacchus brand.

JAF Herb is also used on the menus, and on the website, assisted by Volkhov.

JAF Herb, along with Cubano, is used for the London-based fried chicken restaurant chain Coqfighter. The website features Cooper Black, Proxima Nova and Futura. The brand identity and the beer packaging were designed by illustrator and tatoo-artist Sophie Mo.

American rapper Wiz Khalifa’s latest release, an EP titled The Saga Of Wiz Khalifa, features JAF Herb on its album cover.

A bissl wos gäd ollawei! (There is always a way) is a small book from Langenscheidt, a well known dictionary publisher in Germany. This book, in which the headings are nicely set in JAF Herb, is a light-hearted Bavarian “chat-up” dictionary.

This book for young LEGO fans, The Book of Monsters, is using JAF Herb for the headlines alongside Centaur for the body text.
