“Sea of Stories” explores the displacements and imagined returns of the Palestinian community in Lebanon throughout the Mediterranean Sea. The Palestinian experience and imagination has travelled the Mediterranean, temporarily setting anchor in several of its ports, and perpetually seeking the route back to Palestine. In the words of Palestinian poet Tawfiq Zayyad, Palestinians have continued to “plow the sea” in a relentless effort to return.

Located in the heart of Beirut, Dar El-Nimer for Arts and Culture was founded by art collector Rami El-Nimer as an independent non-profit art foundation. It is an interactive, easily accessible cultural space dedicated to historical, modern and contemporary cultural productions from Palestine, the Levant and beyond.

Dar El-Nimer hosts productions by curators, writers, historians, performers, musicians and filmmakers whose works are engaging with the challenging social realities and political currents shaping the region.
Beirut’s vibrant civil society and expressive freedoms are unique in our part of the world and have allowed for the development of Dar El-Nimer as a cultural center that can address pressing current issues and historical complexities with openness, critically and creatively. It also allows for Dar El-Nimer to serve as a cultural hub for Lebanon’s Palestinian community and as a space for research, dialogue and intellectual engagement.

دار النمر للفن والثقافة، التي أسّسها جامع الأعمال الفنية رامي النمر، هي مؤسسة فنية مستقلة غير ربحية وفضاء ثقافي تفاعلي في قلب بيروت. تتخصص الدار في عرض الإنتاج الثقافي القديم والحديث والمعاصر من فلسطين وبلاد الشام، وإن كانت نشاطاتها لا تقتصر على ذلك.

Best Hundred Arabic Posters is the first poster design competition honoring the best 100 poster designs in the Arab world.

The non-profit organisation based in Cairo wants to recognise, to promote and expand the Arabic graphic design scene by establishing the competition of the best 100 posters produced in the region.

Curated by Noor Aldabbagh, Once Upon Design is an exhibition that features seven installations which were locally produced commissions that offer a contemporary outlook on Arabian customs and traditions.

مكان في جديد الزمان: طرق حديثة لتصمــيم تراث الجزيرة العربية

معـــرض “مكان في جديد الزمان: طرق حديثة لتصمــيم تراث الجزيرة العربية” للقيمة والمشرفة نور الدباغ، بسبعة أعمال فنية جديدة تم تكليف سبعة مصممين بإنجازها محلياً تسلط الضوء على عناصر مختارة من تراث الجزيرة العربية، وتوضح طــرق جديدة لأعراف وموروثــات قديمـــة، من خلال تحسينها أو تعديلها أو ربما قلبها رأساً على عقب.

This book is about the satirical TV comedy show Asaad Allah Masakom (“Good Evening”) by MBC. It was written by Zaven Kouyoumdjian, with illustrations by Hanane Kai. The cover was designed by Maajoun. Published by هاشيت أنطوان Hachette Antoine.

Poster series created by renowned Iranian graphic designer Reza Abedini, showcasing various typefaces by 29Letters.

Since we wanted the posters to be a collaborative effort between Abedini’s (graphic designer) and my (type designer) skills, Abedini had full freedom to play with the fonts and create unique visuals, instead of just designing the posters to showcase the fonts. Abedini wanted the posters to stand by themselves as unique visual items and not only as typographic products promoting a certain set of fonts.

A human figure was introduced in each poster to interact with the typeface displayed. A young Arabic literature expert, Hussein Nasseeddine, gave Abedini a set of phrases and quotes written by several renowned Arabic poets and writers such as Illias Khoury, Hassan Dawood, Mahmoud Darwish, among others. In each poster, the selected text, the human silhouette, and one of 29LT fonts were meticulously chosen to create the right visual aspect of the poster.

The 29LT Zeyn typeface is very delicate and reflects elegance and grace. Its extremely high contrast had to be displaced in a big size to reveal the intricacy of its outline. A silhouette of a determined, focused man in a precise outfit and elegant atmosphere is illustrated with a thin line and black mass reflecting the elegance and contrast of the typeface. Abedini chose the quote from Hassan Dawood, “I always want to have something to see, like I am watching something, to be able to write. Only then, when I am describing what I see, I find myself in writing.”

The 29LT Zarid typeface is very robust and echoes seriousness. Its black edgy pen strokes contrast sharply with the white space within and around them. Abedini chose to work with the quote of Mahmoud Darwish, “The Truth is white, so write it in the ink of crow. And the Truth is black, so write about it with the light of the mirage” to reflect the seriousness of the type design and the humanistic idea of Black and White. The font was outlined and overlaid with a pattern of striped lines reflecting the vagueness of black or white truth. The typographic visual was emphasized with a figure of a speechless woman and that of a superior woman with a loud voice coming from inside her.

The 29LT Massira typeface is a freehand type inspired from the political graffiti writings in Beirut. Abedini chose a revolutionary satirical quote from Mohammad Al Maghout “What is the benefit in being able to write anything in this world, when you are unable to change anything in it.” The human figure is taken from a screen shot of a woman from a political movie. She represents the revolutionary ideas of women even when they are shown to be calm in statues.

Mona Hatoum: Turbulence is an art book designed by Huda Smitshuijzen-AbiFares for Mathaf — Arab Museum of Modern Art in Qatar.

Hachette Antoine in Beirut have published a new edition with books by Nizar Qabanni. 29LT Azer is used for the book titles on the covers as well as for the chapter titles. The Nizar Qabanni book series including the logo, the book covers and the interior is designed by Pascal Zoghbi.
