Filmotype Liberty in use

Filmotype Liberty in use. Released 1955 together with the bolder Lilac, “in response to its customers requests for an italic version of its popular Filmotype Honey typeface to expand its handlettered pen script styles.” — Filmotype/MyFonts. The slightly wider Jackson was added later. Copied by VGC as A-57, with Lilac as A-62 and Jackson as A-69.

This self-titled vinyl record appears to have been their only release. The LP was recorded at, and/or published by, Wight Audio Studio, out of Princeton, New Jersey. It is likely the band was also based in New Jersey, but little else is known about the group. (N.B. These Orange Peels are not to be confused with a more recent California group with the same name.)

The simple jacket design uses Tempo Heavy, as do the record’s labels. The names of the band members are listed in the Bold weight. The studio’s logo employs Filmotype Liberty and a Bodoni Roman.

Most featured silly titles and photography to match. The actual packaging didn't contain a vinyl LP, only a paper insert that read like, “I bought this Album for you as a gift... sorry, I couldn't afford the record.”

The title is set out in Barclay, released by Photo-Lettering and originally drafted by lithographic stone engraver George Playford (PLINC co-founder Harold Horman's father-in-law). Upon Photo-Lettering’s founding, Playford’s alphabets, with their subtle mannerisms, were made part of PLINC’s original assets and were renamed after regions in New York City’s pre-NANP 2L-5N phone dialing program. These included Bryant, Digby, Longacre, Butterfield, Watkins, Wickersham, Tompkins Square, Lackawanna, Schuyler, Academy, Chelsea, Cortlandt, Algonquin, University, Worth, and Barclay.
