Apart from the lyra logo in the top left corner, Zdeněk Hašler’s cover design for the 17th edition of Bratislavská lýra in 1982 is exclusively typographic. The main typeface is Othmar Motter’s lowercase-only Alustyle, set on an angle, with custom diacritics. Each of the three singles with songs from the Czechoslovak festival of popular music has stripes printed in a different color.

Hungarian poster for the film տղամարդիկ (Tghamardik; Russian: Muzhchiny; English: The Men; Hungarian: Mi Férfiak) by Armenian Soviet director Edmond Keosayan (1936–1994). Designer Zoltan Kálmánchey (1942–1999) used Motter Alustyle for the title. The all-lowercase face is paired with all-caps ITC Ronda for the small text, featuring several of the original alternates like round A, M, K which are not included in ITC’s digital Pro version.

Alex Giorgi Sport logo

Looking back, Othmar Motter characterized his Motter Alustyle as “a flash in the pan. A purely fashionable typeface. Whereas, on principle, I otherwise didn’t really respond to fashionable or trendy faces”.*

This didn’t stop him from reactivating Alustyle for a logo design made in the early 1990s, two decades after he released it through Berthold Fototypes in 1972. Alex Giorgi was a sport equipment shop in Grödnertal, Italy. It’s not clear if the logo design was implemented.

Valérie Čižmárová ‎singles (Supraphon, 1974–1977)

Valérie Čižmárová (1952–2005) was a Czech singer and actress of Slovak origin. In 1973, Gustav Šeďa designed a template that was used for several of her single releases on Supraphon.

Šeďa combined photography by Vilém Sochůrek with one of Othmar Motter’s lesser known typefaces. The lowercase-only Motter Alustyle was released through Berthold Fototypes in 1972. The diacritics may have been made from a comma. Note that the shape used for the háček (caron) serves for the acute, too – just flipped. Alustyle’s diagonal notches were echoed in the frames as well.

The images show the sleeve for “Správnej Hoch” / “Mám Už Toho Dost” (1976). The same design was also used for “Jeho Laskominy” / “Střapatá Chryzantéma” (1975) and “Spousta Příběhů” / “Zrzek” (1974). The preprinted picture sleeve was overprinted with the titles and the serial number set in two weights from Zhurnalnaya Roublennaya, here with a monocular a.

Czechoslovak poster for the Hungarian crime drama Kopjások (1975, English: Pikemen), directed by György Palásthy, designed by Renáta Vlachová in 1976. The typeface is Motter Alustyle, designed by Othmar Motter and released by Berthold in 1972.
