Originated at Schelter
& Giesecke as Schmale fette Egyptienne in 1888.
[Wetzig 1926–40] Poster sizes were named
Nereus. [1912
specimen] Offizin Haag Drugulin had a similar design as
Fette Egyptienne. [specimen]
Acquired by Typefoundry Amsterdam in 1914 and sold as Vette
Verlengde Egyptienne. [Amsterdam 1968] [1916
specimen] Some sources credit “Tetterode Foundry in about 1820”
[Linotype],
but that’s in error – Tetterode wasn’t founded until 1851.
Imported to the U.S. by Amsterdam Continental as Egyptian
Bold Condensed [A
Handbook of Types], together with the wider Egyptian Bold Extended, which was added by
Amsterdam in 1955, credited to Walter H. McKay. [Reichardt 2011] Phototype adaptations by
Photo-Lettering (as Amsterdam Egyptian Extra
Bold) [PLINC 1965], VGC
[VGC 1973], and Berthold [Berthold 1974]. Dry transfer adaptations by
Letraset in 1972 as
Egyptienne Bold Condensed with the added
Egyptian [sic!] Outline [Letraslut]
and by Mecanorma as
Egyptienne Bold Condensed and Egyptienne
Outline [1973 catalog] as well as by Alfac [Alfac ≥1985].
