Season 1 title featuring a modified version of Fanfare

Title sequence for the TV show Quantum Leap that ran from 1989 to 1993, designed by Betty Green.

The title itself features a modified version of Fanfare with triangles added in the Q and A. The season 1 version of the title sequence also uses Fanfare for the years that flash by, and the bold weight of Kabel Condensed for the credits.

Seasons 2 to 5 continue to use Fanfare for the main title, now with beveled edges, but switches to Dynamo for the years and Futura Extra Bold Condensed for the credits.

SuperMag was a teen magazine published in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Issue 8 from 1978 included a feature with jack-o’-lantern recipes by Carolyn Vanderslice, with illustrations by Gordon Kibbee. The title is set in bichromatic Fat Albert, with a big round and pumpkin-colored double O, supported by Kabel Condensed.

Der Schatz der Sierra Madre (The Treasure of Sierra Madre), 1966. This western written and directed by John Huston is an adaptation of B. Traven’s 1927 novel of the same name, and was first released in 1948.

Hans Hillmann (1925–2014) was a big fan of Kabel schmalhalbfett, or Kabel Bold Condensed (1928). Shown here are two posters (DIN A1, 59×84 cm) for re-releases of movies starring Humphrey Bogart, designed for Neue Filmkunst Walter Kirchner in Göttingen.

Hillmann contrasted the big bold letterforms with smaller type from another member of the same type family, the delicate Kabel leicht (1927). He used these typographic ingredients for the poster for Der Malteser Falke (1972), too, another film featuring Bogart, which has been posted here before.

Tote schlafen fest (The Big Sleep), 1972. Originally released in 1946, this film noir directed by Howard Hawks is an adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s novel from 1939.

Ad in Typographische MItteilungen, Vol. 27, Issue 7, July 1930. The font in use is Rudolf Koch’s Schmale Kabel, or Kabel Condensed, which had just been released. It here is used with the then common ligatures for ch and tz. Unlike in another ad promoting the typeface itself, the long s (ſ) has not been employed – it could have been used in “Klingſpor”.
