Designed by Georg Schiller, then Imperial Engraver at the
Reichsdruckerei Berlin, for the official catalog of the German
exhibition at the Exposition
Universelle of 1900 in Paris. The matrices were subsequently
given to private foundries, to make the type available to the
public [Bertheau 1995]. Cut 1898–1899 in 12 sizes
[Reichardt/Hoefer]. Shown in a
Reichsdruckerei specimen from 1910 in two weights,
Neudeutsch and Neudeutsch mager. Cast by
Rühl as
Neudeutsch and by John
as Buchschrift “Ideal”. Rühl also had the lighter
weight (mager) and an open style (licht) [Reichardt 2011]. Gebr. Mejo made a brass
version for engraving [Letter
Library]. Alternate caps in a roman style were available
[Typographische Jahrbücher 1901].
Shown in the Solotype catalog as Eros Text.
