Initially advertised by Inland in 1898 as Gothic No. 8. Later shown as Gothic 578 until 1941. [McGrew 1993] Comstock is a contoured version. Keystone’s Standard Gothic was very similar, but without a horizontal on the ‘G’.
Appears to be a direct precursor to Franklin Gothic, which is more narrow overall, with a few shapes that are more open (CPRe).
