Environmental, societal and health disruptions are making our future uncertain. Worry permeates conversations, the media and social networks. Our imaginations are running wild. They illustrate our fears, but also our desire for change. Based on transdisciplinary scientific analysis, Renaissances offers a powerful emotional experience. It allows us to decipher these imaginaries and use them as a springboard for construction. It's an opportunity to ask questions about the future of our society, and to take part in the great fork in the road ahead.

Renaissances is a temporary exhibition at the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie in Paris, France, which closed in March 2022. Renaissances still has two offerings: an online experience and a collection of futuristic fictions.

For this exhibition, graphic designer and illustrator Tristan Maillet used the typefaces Maax Raw and Maax Raw Stencil, designed by Damien Gautier and available from 205TF. The scenography was designed by Les Crayons and Yves Morel Workshop.

Mohamed Elali is a multi-talented artist. His portfolio website was designed by Brest Brest Brest, who chose Gaya as his brand typeface, paired with Maax Raw.

Based between France and Morocco, I explore in my work the beauty and the substances of these places by combining techniques of cut-outs, collages, paintings and pottery. At a time of a weakened planet, Bureau 205 and the École urbaine de Lyon [Lyon urban school: an interdisciplinary experimental project for research, PhD training and economic, social and cultural development of scientific knowledge] question the editorial process. The magazine A°2020 is the first result of this investigation.

Editing “anthropocene” means reflecting simultaneously on all aspects of the process, paying attention to people (authors, publishers, printers, designers, distributors, booksellers, librarians…) with the search for qualified and certified skills, attention to materials — from forest to paper, from plant to ink —, general attention to the optimization of human and material resources by favoring short distances in order to lessen the impact of transport, by imagining an editorial policy that’s inventive in order to limit waste.

Bureau 205 set out to design an object that could transmit the content gathered in this magazine whose authors come from various fields: academic, scientific, literary and artistic. Their contributions make it possible to grasp the concept of the Anthropocene from complementary points of view and gain a detailed understanding of the issues.

As we question ourselves more and more about the future habitability of the earth, about the just and ethical conditions for implementing the strategies of ecological reorientations of our cohabitations, it is crucial to make known the anthropocene realities, to analyze the dynamics at work, in particular those linked to urbanization and bringing into discussion what can guide our collective action.

Each part of the magazine has a specific layout, illustrating the complementarity of the contents and their mutual enrichment. To limit the magazine’s carbon footprint, only leftover paper available from the printer was used. The magazine is then printed on five different papers for this first issue.

The magazine exclusively uses typefaces created by designers affiliated with 205TF.

The portfolio website of New York experience designer Irene Kuo uses Maax and Maax Raw (205TF), Apoc (Blaze Type) and Adieu (Good Type Foundry). Maax Raw is used in two weights for headlines and page navigation, Maax is used for body text. In the visuals, Maax is used with a set of alternate glyphs: note the tail on the lowercase a and the double-storey g.

Bureau 205 choose Maax Raw, created by Damien Gautier, to design the signage of the Marché gare (concert hall and residences).

Rabbit Hole is a creative studio specializing in art direction, brand identity design & web development. The designers drew the identity of Page\Park using Maax Raw (by Damien Gautier) as the main typeface. For the studio launch invitations, Rabbit Hole used the rotalic version which is so specific. The logo uses Trio Grotesk with a customized backslash. Page\Park is an award-winning architectural practice undertaking work across the UK from their studios in Glasgow and Leeds.

For the design of Le journal de La Confluence, Bureau 205 chose Cosimo, created by Matthieu Cortat, as well as Maax Raw and Beretta Sans — created by Damien Gautier and already available on 205TF —, Plaax and Alcalà — soon available from 205.tf.

Ten years after designing the visual identity of the urban project Lyon Confluence, Bureau 205 imagined its evolution in 2016. The system is deployed on the editions, scenography of exhibitions, construction site signs. It was designed with the new version of the Maax typeface: Maax Raw created by Damien Gautier.
