Quirinale is the typeface used for a 1980 album of Gustav Holst’s The Planets as performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra with conductor Seiji Ozawa (1935–2024). The standard cover features a photograph by Ruud Nooy, showing a golden statue of Mercury with winged hat and money bag in the right hand.

The same typography in a different arrangement was used for an alternate cover, this time together with an image of Earth, Moon (?), and a space probe, possibly Pioneer 10.

This recording of symphonies by Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959), Czech composer of modern classical music, was performed by the Česká filharmonie under the direction of chief conductor Václav Neumann (1920–1995) and issued by Czechoslovak record company Supraphon in 1980. The box set with four LPs was made for export, as suggested by the English (and Russian) text.

Cover designer Miroslav Jiránek combined two typefaces from the catalog of Mecanorma, the French manufacturer of dry transfer lettering: Martinů’s name is shown in New Zelek, with a hyper-extended diagonal in M and a custom added kroužek, or ring, on the U. Subsequent text is shown in caps from Quirinale, with “Symphonies” enclosed in a cartouche. The box was printed at Severografia Děčín.

Born in 1951, Jiránek studied graphic design at Prague’s Academy of Arts (today also known as UMPRUM). After graduating in 1979, he worked in the field of design for about ten years, before devoting himself to painting. He’s the younger brother of cartoonist Vladimír Jiránek (1938–2012) [Galerie La Femme].

Imyra, Tayra, Ipy, Taiguara is the eleventh album of Brazilian singer-songwriter Taiguara Chalar da Silva (1945–1996). It features the arrangements made by Taiguara himself and Hermeto Pascoal and appearances of many prominent MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) heroes: Toninho Horta, Wagner Tiso, Novelli, Zé Eduardo Nazário, Paulo Braga, Nivaldo Ornelas, etc. The album was named after Taiguara’s family.

Imyra, Tayra, Ipy, Taiguara was released by EMI-Odeon in 1976 and was banned within 72 hours after its release by the military dictatorship. The copies were collected from stores and destroyed.

The album cover shows the rare Quirinale typeface in both weights.

Both typefaces were carried by Mecanorma, the French manufacturer of dry-transfer sheets. Quirinale was added to their range around 1973.

First single from Holger Czukay’s solo debut album Movies (1979), here spelled “CooL IN THE PooL”, with “Oh Lord Give Us More Money” as B-side.

The typeface is the rarely seen Quirinale, designed by H. Baumgart (Helmut Baumgart?) for Haas in 1970. It was probably only available in the dry-transfer version sold by Mecanorma. Quirinale may have been the last typeface design that originated at the Haas’sche Schriftgießerei (apart from a few Helvetica extensions issued in the early 1970s), marking the end of 400 years of history.
