Caslon No. 471 was ATF’s first version of
Caslon, based
on MS&J’s
Original Old Style (later
Old Style No. 71). It was followed by Caslon
No. 540 (1902) with shortened descenders for standard
alignment. Eventually, alternates made the two variations
essentially equivalent. “About 1920, Thomas M. Cleland designed a
dozen swash letters to be used with Caslon Oldstyle Italic
No. 471, and a dozen more were designed in 1923 for Curtis
Publishing Company, perhaps by another designer. […] By 1927 most
of these letters, plus a few others, were being made for
Caslon Italic No. 540.” [McGrew 1993]

[Daines 2016] With the exception of a simplified cap ‘I’, slightly different forms for ‘Q’ and ‘T’ and maybe newly added swash forms for ‘X’ and ‘Z’, it closely follows ATF’s foundry version(s).
Various digitizations. Adobe’s and Linotype’s have small caps for the Regular. URW’s has the Italic only, but comes with swash alternates. ITC has a digital version of Letraset’s version as Caslon Italic and Swashes. ParaType’s (2002) is based on Bitstream’s and adds Cyrillics, designed by Isay Slutsker and Manvel Shmavonyan.
